Ok, I'm not what one could call a hardcore environmentalist by any stretch of the imagination, and I like Japan well enough, for the most part...

...but I think this kind of sucks.

I dunno myself. Fish stocks are affected by things like this, and protecting a species will always have a dramatic effect on the species it feeds on - always most noticable when we also feed on those species.

One example is the seal industry in Labrador/Newfoundland. Green Peace and other groups have beaten that industry into the ground with sympathy tactics on people who don't know shit with "Awww... how c00t.... don't hurt them!"

Meanwhile the fish industry up there is practically dead since that booming seal population (that has no significant predators other than humans) eats... fish! The seal population up there isn't even in any real danger of extinction either. It's entirely about the "awwww... how c00t..."

I'm not saying release all restrictions on whaling or any other species humans hunt - hunting to extinction is not a solution. What's needed is proper control and regulation - and sufficient supervision to catch those who refuse to adhere to said regulations.
