"Netflix DMC Is Official Fanfiction | Castle Super Beast 315 Clip"

I'm mostly like Woolie in the above video in that I haven't seen the Devil May Cry Netflix thing yet, but I'm also not like Woolie (or Pat or Gene) in that the only Devil May Cry that I've played at all is the first one, and also I have little to no interest in seeing the Netflix Devil May Cry thing to start with (and even less, now). I've seen some LPs of the later games, but I haven't touched them myself. Basically everything I know about the later Devil May Cry games comes almost solely from these guys.

So anyway... apparently, this new Devil May Cry Netflix show sucks balls, I guess? They do compare it (unfavorably) to the first Netflix Castlevania show, and I would probably agree with most of what they said about that, here.

"Does Mortal Kombat Still Hold Up?"

"Lani, Jesse, and Stephan test their might with 1995's Mortal Kombat!"

It's almost 6am, so instead of going to bed like I should be doing, I will instead post this. And then go to bed.

Yeah, the first Mortal Kombat movie is probably what I would consider to be the first ever video game movie that was actually passably good. Before that was Super Mario Bros: The Movie, then Double Dragon, and then Street Fighter: The Movie (and I forgot that the DD movie actually came out a month or two before the SF movie). I still say that SMB:TM was a kinda sorta okay movie... it just wasn't really Super Mario Bros. at all. Double Dragon was dogshit, and not even in a "so bad it's good" kind of way. Street Fighter, on the other hand, was so hilariously bad that it kind of rounded the corner to being good again. (I am so there when TFS reviews that one, which they said in this video will probably be the one they do next.) And after that... well... a metric assload of other movies based on video games, a few of which were okay, most of which were garbage, and also most of which I have not seen myself (and most of the few I've seen skewed more toward garbage than not).

Again, though, Mortal Kombat was the first one that actually felt like it did justice to the game it was portraying, for the most part. But... then along came the sequel, Annihilation, which was pretty much Double Dragon-level dogshit. Aside from those two, I haven't seen any of the other movies (animated or live action) or the TV shows (or "web show" in the latter case) that were based on Mortal Kombat.

"Dragon Ball at the Movies | Korean Dragon Ball (1990)"

We're off to the movies! Let's see how Dragon Ball has been carried to live-action around the world! First up: Korea!

Movie Title: Dragon Ball: Son Goku Fights, Son Goku Wins (1990)

Wow. Wooowwww. WTAF. I... might just have to seek this thing out. As they point out in the above, there are choices.

"When You Don’t Want It To End | Castle Super Beast 292"

I've done this with far too many video games and some anime (e.g. Hajime no Ippo), usually more for Pat's reasons (just getting distracted by the next shiny thing) than the other ones.

"Sparking Zero: Goku Action Figure Simulator | Castle Super Beast 291 Clip"

The best parts of this video were the parts where they weren't talking about Sparking Zero or Dragon Ball, which were significant portions of that 47 minute runtime.

The phrase "in shambles" needs a time-out.

If I had a dollar for every time over the past few years that I've seen some fluff piece on some "fandom news" website (video games or otherwise) use the phrase "in shambles" to describe the state of any given fandom after some dumb, silly thing happened in/to/around whatever thing said fandom was a fandom of (or perhaps in/to/around the fandom itself), I'd probably have at least $20 or $30 by this point. And while it'd be great to have an extra $30 out of the blue for nothing at all, I'd really rather have not seen "in shambles" being used so much, especially if the "shambles" that these fans were supposedly "in" happened to be "complete" or "utter" or "absolute."

Shit like this (only ever so slightly exaggerated): "This One Character Kissed This Other Character In Current-Flavor-Of-The-Month-Anime And All Fans Everywhere Are Just In Complete, Utter, Absolute, Total, Literal Shambles Over It!!!"

"Mercedes Varnado picks which Sailor Scout would make the best professional wrestler"

"The answer may surprise you!"

I would've said either Makoto/Jupiter or Haruka/Uranus. Ami/Mercury would've been at the bottom of my list, or maybe tied with Hotaru/Saturn.

Though I guess it depends on if powers are allowed or not. In that case, maybe Mercury would be at the top, since she's about the only one of them who has non-lethal powers. As one of the comments mentioned, maybe the Shabon Spray could be used as a Great Muta poison mist kind of thing? *shrug* But even then, just from a personality standpoint, I don't see Mercury doing well as a professional wrestler, simply because it doesn't seem like the kind of thing she'd ever want to do.

Akira Toriyama has died

:(

(EDIT)

Via KaiserNeko of TeamFourStar.

"I'm incredibly fucked up over this, so I needed to get this out.

"Toriyama not only changed the manga industry, he changed the landscape of ART. The sheer scale of his influence is as immeasurable as it is profound.

"The art he created, the lives he's touched, the work he's inspired. Words alone could never do the man's life justice."

"Detectives Who Can Solve Death Note Tier List | Castle Super Beast Clips"

Here is the meme in question.

I find "who would succeed or fail at this specific thing in these specific ways" type of "whowouldwin" things a lot more interesting than shit like "could Goku beat Superman" or whatever. (Also, I don't know who at least half of the people in that image even are.)

Anyway, Youtube hasn't locked me out entirely, yet.

"Lessons in Fatherhood With Pat, Week 2 | Castle Super Beast Clips"

Hearing these two guys talking about Pat being a new dad is pretty surreal.

Given the thumbnail, I was expecting them to talk about how changing diapers was like Diavolo being hit with Gold Experience Requiem, except with diaper changing instead of dying, but they never mentioned it. Pat just said he'd gotten a lot of practice really quickly, and it had messed him up so much that he went to bed worrying about poop under his own balls.

"Mario fans are worried Super Mario Bros. Wonder will bring back the worst guy"

And by "Mario fans," Polygon really meant "that one guy on Twitter who happened to remember this obscure as fuck anime movie." What bothers me way more than the possible return of this Haru guy is the possible return of that ass-ugly yellow/orange color scheme for Luigi.

Oh, and here's the movie in question, by the way (which I will be watching for myself in a bit):

(EDIT)

In this, the Mario brothers are not plumbers, nor are they carpenters. In this, they run a grocery store. Go figure.

Mario is kind of cowardly. And while both of them are greedy, Luigi is the far more greedy one of the two. And, most of all, both of them are kind of egregious dumbasses.

And yet, they still manage to save the princess in the end, with the help of the three power items (mushroom, flower, and star) and that little blue dog thing that turns into Prince Haru in the last five minutes of the movie. As such, I certainly wouldn't say that he's "the worst guy" or "one of the Mario franchise’s most despised characters" or "a guy that people hate." (Really, Peach could do way better than Mario as he was depicted in this movie. That said, I don't necessarily think she should be basing her marital decisions solely on legends about random guys wearing matching jewelry, either.)

The Toads in this were weirdly hot.

There was a brief scene where Mario is dressed as a stereotypical Mexican bandito... for some reason. I wonder when that particular power up will ever appear in one of the games. ¬_¬ (Assuming it hasn't already, and I'm just not aware of it...)

And there were these strange moments where they'd stop everything to advertise things like Mario ramen or Mario rice seasoning. It was really odd and out of nowhere.

Okay... so, it wasn't great, but it wasn't terrible, either. I'd say it was probably at least on par with anything you'd see in The Super Mario Bros. Super Show. It was certainly a better representation of the games than the live action movie was (though I still have a soft spot for that one, even so). Can't compare it to that new The Super Mario Bros. Movie, since I still haven't seen that one, yet.

Ugh, man...

This has been yet another one of those nights where I tripped and fell headfirst down a "versus battle"/"whowouldwin" rabbithole. I'll try to keep this generally speaking, but there are a few specifics of this particular instance of rabbitholing which I'll mention toward the end.

It seems to almost invariably come down to some form of either Superman or Goku. Granted, there are other characters, like Lucifer Morningstar (with or without Michael Demiurgos) or Featherine Augustus Aurora or Elder God Demonbane or Saitama or Bugs Bunny or whoever else, but even those often tend to get thrown at Superman and/or Goku.

With Goku, there's broken shit like Xeno (not to be confused with Zeno), but he's usually just a part of Composite Goku (which may or may not include things like Vegito or Gogeta).

As for Superman, I've long been aware of broken stuff like Superman Prime One Million and Superman with the Sword of Superman and, of course, the fucking Thought Robot/Cosmic Armor Superman. However, tonight, I learned of the existence of two more completely busted Supermans, those being Strange Visitor Superman and... ...Milkman Superman (aka Milkman Man). And... it is there, with the concept of "Milkman Man," that I have to bail completely the fuck out of this particular instance of this particular rabbithole and go the hell to bed.

In the end, it all boils down to nerds arguing (usually poorly) at each other on the Internet. It's morbidly fascinating to look at, occasionally, but I can only take it in small-ish doses.

"HOW TO RECOMMEND NEW ANIME TO FRIENDS"

Okay, the editing on this is pretty good. Minh as an eldritch abomination is pretty neat.

Haruhi is one of those "been meaning to get around to that someday" shows for me. That said, while I know about the whole Endless Eight thing, I was actually unaware until now that the show itself, as a whole, was aired intentionally out of order from what it was in the light novels.

I'm honestly not sure if that makes me more or less inclined to want to watch it someday. Assuming I ever watched it at all, I'm not sure if I'd try to watch it in chronological order, or original broadcast order.

Okay, having seen Hamilton between the last time I watched Hellsing Ultimate Abridged and yesterday/today when I watched it again, I just want to say that thing there makes a whole lot more sense.

Oh, and mild spoilers for Hellsing, I guess?

"Hollywood Will Never Be Bebop | Castle Super Beast Clips"

Yeah, this is my second post just today alone that has to do with Executive Meddling.

Cowboy Bebop is yet another one of those "haven't watched it yet, but maybe someday" anime. As such, I already had next to no interest in the Netflix version.

"Dracula: Sovereign of the Damned (1980) [Full Film, Subbed, 16mm Scan]"

HAPPY HALLOWEEN! We've teamed up with LonelyChaser Fansubs to bring you a fully subtitled, 4K 16mm scan of the Dracula movie from Marvel and Toei Animation!

In the very first animated movie ever based on a Marvel comic, Count Dracula, lord of vampires and the sovereign of the damned, steals away a bride intended for Lucifer. Not only does this anger his dark creator but also a satanic cult and his fellow vampires. He finds that the sins of his past will not allow him to live a normal, mortal life. Events become complicated when he comes under attack from all sides, including his vampire hunting great-grandson and the children of others he murdered long ago.

This 16mm film was acquired by MartyMcFlies of LonelyChaser, and was scanned in 4K. It was also color corrected and touched up by us. The first reel unfortunately ended up being very moldy, reproduced as a blue-ish pattern over the film, and this could not be fixed, along with some heavy scratches running down the film in the first reel. Software is not capable of digitally restoring these issues without massive time-consuming frame by frame work, which we do not have the time, manpower, or budget for. The audio was sourced from the optical sound track on the film itself. This is likely the best this film will ever look, as neither Marvel nor Toei have seemingly any interest in acknowledging its existence.

This thing... of all the Dracula things I've seen, and I've seen a fair few in my time, that... was certainly one of them. It is, apparently, based on The Tomb of Dracula comic books, in which Blade made his first appearance. Blade was not in the above movie, though, sadly.

I downloaded the torrent version found in the pinned comment under the above embedded Youtube video, which has both the Japanese and English dub versions. I watched the English dub. Might also watch the Japanese version later, at some point.

I first learned of this movie when I saw a couple of parody dubs of it the other day (which I found via Team Four Star's Dragon Ball Z Abridged Creator Commentary, where they happened to mention the "Piccolo Lays A Beating" parody, made by the same guy [who was, apparently, also the second voice of Kami in DBZA itself, among several other voices]).

2022-12-26 02:51 am

I really need to start writing again.

Like, at all. (Dreamwidth posts don't count, not really.)

I've left MLP/Star Trek crossover fanfiction behind. (Like, duh, since I haven't written any of that since before moving back to NC from WA). Or, perhaps more appropriately, it left me behind, given I kinda stopped watching MLP:FiM after the start of season 5 or so, even though I always keep meaning to go back and watch the rest of it "someday." (Sure, I'll get right on that after I finish Pretty Guardian Sailor Moon and/or Sailor Moon Crystal which I've also been meaning to get around to watching "someday." In any case, the likelihood of doing that getting me to write another Sailor Moon/Castlevania fic or whatever is about the same as [re]watching MLP is to getting me to finish those MLP/Trek things. I.e. not too awfully high at all.)

But there's always that novel that I've been "working on" for the past... *counts on fingers* ...eight... no, more like almost nine by this point... ...years... ....goddamn..... now... and on which I've made next to no progress for about half that time.

Or the other novel that I've been working on occasionally thinking about for even longer than that, by like at least a whole decade (talking even pre-DigiPen here), and even wrote a shitty prologue for at one point.

Hell, I barely even write in my damn pencil-and-paper journal anymore. Maybe once or twice a month at most, these days.

Thought I'd cheer myself up a bit by listening to some music... but then that just got me thinking about Alec Holowka again... which probably isn't the best thing for my frame of mind right now. And yet, I'm still listening to it even as I type this thing here, whatever this is. Oh well, at least I haven't reached Shivers 2: Harvest of Souls levels of funk, yet... oh... wait... (Seriously, I love that song, and it's my favorite of that soundtrack, but it [and some of the others] can be pretty damn depressing, if I'm in just the wrong sort of mood, which appears to be the case tonight.)

Blargh. Should probably just go to bed already. Enough 報復性熬夜 (and self-referential links) for one night, I guess.

</whiny, effete rant mode>
