A little experiment

I tried a little experiment yesterday (and the day before). Lately, I've found myself staying up until 3 and 4 in the morning, and then sleeping until between noon and 1 in the afternoon. Believe it or not, I'm actually starting to get tired and annoyed with that sleep schedule, so I tried doing something about it.

I'd heard from [livejournal.com profile] owsf2000 that you could kind of "reset" your internal clock and sleeping schedule if you just stayed awake the entire day and that when the next night rolled around, you could sort of pick when you went to bed and you'd be so tired you'd pretty much fall asleep instantly, instead of staying awake until the time you usually go to sleep. The latter was the case with me when I tried going to bed at midnight or 1 prior to doing this. I'd just lay awake until 3 or 4 anyway. Well, I got up at noon day before yesterday and decided to give it a shot. In the end, I ended up staying awake for 35 hours, or until 11 pm last night. I went to bed and practically went to sleep almost immediately.

The problem was... I ended up sleeping for twelve and a half hours, so I didn't get up until about 11:30 am anyway, which sort of defeated the purpose of doing it in the first place. Though from about 7am onward, I kept waking up every hour on the hour (or at least I dreamed that I did) and the dreams were pretty crazy. I kept repeatedly dreaming that I got up and started my day, only to have something happen to make me realize it was a dream. Then I'd "wake up", go "Holy crap, another hour has passed and I'm still in bed! I need to get up!" and start the whole thing over again. I remember that one of the dreams was that my family had come to visit me early (they're planning to come in August) and that I was in bed when they arrived. It took me 10 minutes, in the dream, for me to finally get up and let them in, and it was shortly after that as they started getting settled in that I realized I was dreaming and "woke up". Another involved me remembering a dream that [livejournal.com profile] owsf2000 mentioned a while back, when he was having a similar experience, in which he dreamed that he'd woken up and come to the computer and told us about his previous "waking up" dreams on IRC, only to realize that that was itself a dream. Basically, I said something while "awake" along the lines of "Oh well, at least I haven't dreamed that I went to the computer and talked about this stuff." So, naturally, the next dream involved me getting up and going to the computer. I never actually made it to the computer before I woke up though, and the whole time I was heading for it, there was the very surreal bullet time slow-down happening, and there was a weird nightmarish quality to it, in that it felt like if I actually made it to the computer something bad would happen. I woke up as soon as I sat down at the comp. The others, though I don't recall much, were just mundane stuff like getting up and getting ready for school and such, even though in one of them I remember thinking it weird that I was getting ready for school even though we were out for the summer.
