Outside stimulus as a component of dreams
Tonight was the first that I can recall that something in the real world has directly affected my dreams. For some reason, I was dreaming about being in the passenger seat of a car with my mom and dad, dad driving and mom sitting in the back seat. We were sitting at a red light just next to Value Village heading toward downtown Redmond (which is odd because my mother has only been here once, back when I first moved here, and my dad has never been here at all, and neither of them would be likely to be driving if they were here), when I heard these three loud beeps.
For some reason, the three beeps were the signal to GO GO GO! even though we were still sitting at a red light. So my dad floored it and whipped a left turn into the Value Village parking lot through the red light. Of course, we immediately got pulled over by the police, and as they were talking to my dad, I heard the three loud beeps again, which this time was a signal to... wake up, I guess? At any rate, I don't remember anything of the dream after that.
It was only after I had rolled over and heard the three beeps a third time that I was vaguely awake enough to realize that they were coming from my cell phone in the other room, crying because its battery was almost dead. So, I got up around 5:30am and plugged the damn thing in.
