In a slight defense to some of those people, supposedly a Versus mode is one of the Free DLCs that are going to be released eventually.
To destroy that defense, the vast majority of the people I saw in that particular steam thread weren't mentioning the Versus mode whatsoever and were going on about inane crap like you mentioned. Things like "Why would we use anything but this if we know this exists?" and other shit.
Seriously when I got good at SotN I actually found a lot of fun playing through the game and adding extra restrictions. Two interesting playthroughs included "No weapons" and "Don't kill anything but the bosses."
Pretty sure I completed it with "No Weapons" by which I mean no equipped weapons. Single use or limited use items were fair game, as were the limited spells.
Can't remember if I completed the "Don't kill anything but the bosses" run although I remember getting a lot farther than I thought possible. And once I got the power of mist it of course became a lot easier to get around.
