Another reason the modern video game industry is shit...
...is because of its fans/consumers.
I dipped my pinkie toe into the Steam forums for Bloodstained, and it is just absolutely infested with morons screaming for "<Insert shard/weapon here> too OP, nerf plz" and whining about "balance" and "DPS" and "optimal play" and so on and so forth, like it was a fucking MMO or multiplayer fighting game or what the fuck ever, where that sort of shit is (ostensibly) important.
It's like everyone whinging about the Alucard Shield/Shield Rod from Symphony of the Night all over again. If you feel that a given weapon or ability is too overpowered in a goddamned singleplayer game, then you are free and clear to not use that weapon/ability to your heart's content. If you're trying to get the developers to break my game just because you don't have the willpower to not (what you erroneously think of as) "cheat," then you can fuck off and die, for all I care.
(Here's the thing, I didn't even know that [for one example] the Welcome Company shard was so supposedly OP, because I never once used it, and I made it through the whole game just fine, no problems at all. Now, however, when I play it again, I might try that shard and abuse the shit out of it, the same way I abused the shit out of Alucard Shield/Shield Rod in SotN after I first learned about it [and then got bored with it and went back to playing the game the "normal" way]. And, again, that will be just fine, no problems at all. People can play the game however the fuck they want, and if you are "ruining" the game for yourself by using an "overpowered" thing or abusing an exploit or whatever, because you somehow can't bring yourself to not do that, then that is your problem, not mine, and not the developers'. Hell, I almost wish that they'd make Welcome Company even stronger just to spite your stupid asses.)
The modern video game industry does asinine bullshit because the modern video game consumer wants them to do asinine bullshit, half the time. And the other half of the time, when the modern video game industry does asinine bullshit that the modern video game consumer does not want, the modern video game consumer still fucking sucks it down anyway, regardless. Either way, in both the former and the latter case, they bitch and moan about it all the while.
TL;DR version: People are annoying and stupid. The End.

To destroy that defense, the vast majority of the people I saw in that particular steam thread weren't mentioning the Versus mode whatsoever and were going on about inane crap like you mentioned. Things like "Why would we use anything but this if we know this exists?" and other shit.
Seriously when I got good at SotN I actually found a lot of fun playing through the game and adding extra restrictions. Two interesting playthroughs included "No weapons" and "Don't kill anything but the bosses."
Pretty sure I completed it with "No Weapons" by which I mean no equipped weapons. Single use or limited use items were fair game, as were the limited spells.
Can't remember if I completed the "Don't kill anything but the bosses" run although I remember getting a lot farther than I thought possible. And once I got the power of mist it of course became a lot easier to get around.

If they were going to do any kind of multiplayer, I'd personally much rather see something like Harmony of Despair. I recall that what we played of that several years ago was pretty cool. That said, given they only have the one playable character so far, with a second one coming but not actually out yet, something like that would probably be much farther in the future. (But then, there were four playable characters already in Curse of the Moon so I dunno...)

Only thing I probably didn't like about HoD is how they had the entire area/castle loaded at once and depended on zooming in/out. Probably made things easier in the long run for them, but it just felt off for me.
