Captain N episode 1x03 - "The Most Dangerous Game Master"
(The previous post.) (The next post.)
Captain N notes
1x03 "The Most Dangerous Game Master"
- Oh no, Mega Man is in the thumbnail for this one. Is this a Mega Man-centered episode? Will this be the one? Will he finally break his streak of using complete sentences without the word "mega" in them?
- Of course, the title of the episode is a play on "The Most Dangerous Game," in which a dude hunts another dude. Aside from the punny name, it's not really relevant to that, though.
- I just noticed that there's a tiny bit of the Metroid main theme in the scene where it zooms in on the Metroid world, and I think it also played similarly in the previous episode, but there's so much extra shit playing that it's a bit hard to make out.
- So, we start with Dr. Wily making another monster for Mother Brain. Because that went so well the last time. And... already, we appear to be going into "mirror match" territory, since what is shown of the body looks like Captain N, especially when Wily attaches a Power Pad to its belt. It also has a Zapper. This is only the third episode, so it seems a bit early for this kind of thing, but oh well.
(EDIT)
- Also, if Dr. Wily can just build Power Pads and Zappers like that, then what makes Kevin so special (aside from being [ostensibly] a "Game Master" from the real world)? Supposedly, it was "the legend" that gave Kevin his, or so said Lana in the first episode anyway. In any case, why doesn't Wily make a set for himself, King Hippo, and Eggplant Wizard, as well, or for any of Mother Brain's other minions? Hell, make a bigger version for Mother Brain herself, for that matter. As good as Captain N (supposedly) is, I bet even he'd have a hard time dealing with an army of Power Pad/Zapper wielding bad guys. Hell, for all I know, something like that actually happens in one of the later episodes that I haven't seen, because I'm pretty sure I haven't seen every episode of Captain N.
(/EDIT)
- The only catch is that they have to scan Kevin's memories to put them into the monster. Onto a cassette tape, using a machine that looks like a tape recorder with some extra doohickeys attached to it. Yeah, this definitely dates the show. It has been decades since the last time I laid eyes on a cassette tape or a tape deck.
- Mother Brain uses a rope attached to a cowbell to summon King Hippo and Eggplant Wizard. No further comment.
- Donkey Kong Jones. Just... Donkey Kong Jones. Huh... that's weird. That drum beat sounds like the one in the Super Mario World cartoon theme, just a bit slower and a bit higher pitched. Anyway, given how huge Donkey Kong was shown to be in the first episode, that means that banana is truly gargantuan.
- Wombat Man. Just... fucking Wombat Man.
- Every time Mega Man speaks, I tense up a bit. Is this it? Nope, not yet.
- Kevin, doing the absolute bare minimum to try to score points with Lana, which apparently works. Of course, this ruffles Simon's jimmies. (And of course the first thing out of Kid Icarus's mouth is "door-icus.")
- Simon doesn't recognize Eggplant Wizard and King Hippo dressed up as TV repairmen, so he just lets them right in. Because he's an utter idiot.
- Eggplant Wizard just casually carries around a device that can turn Duke into a cat, a turkey, and a pig. And then King Hippo uses it to turn Eggplant Wizard into a stupidly hot woman (with dire implications for the future). I'll hazard a guess that this device is never seen again, outside of that one gag. (EDIT) Especially considering that King Hippo just tosses it away, complete with sound effect, after the joke has run its course. (/EDIT)
- Ugh, I hate how goofy Dracula looks in this. Then again, it's fitting for the show, what with how Simon himself looks like a poor man's Cid Highwind (years before Cid Highwind himself was ever a thing).
- And... they all just stand there like lumps while that weird beam comes out of the TV and hits them in the forehead. Anyway, Kevin's worst fear is apparently a bigger, beefier, jockier version of himself.
- "So long, Captain S and hissoccersucker team!" ... ...aw man, I miss Captain S.
- So, yeah, this seems like a really convoluted plan. Get Kevin's memories so that they can implant them into a monster that will definitely be defeated by the end of the episode. If they'd used a death beam there instead of a memory-sucking beam, that would've been the end of the show. So of course they can't do that. I guess I was spoiled by the D&D cartoon and Venger's general overall competence, at least compared to every other 80s cartoon villain.
- Mother Brain throws KH and EW a literal bone, and that's the joke.
- Man, I'm already sick of that weird gasp/intake of breath that Dr. Wily does. Anyway, in the second Frankenstein parody in as many episodes, Dr. Wily brings his creation to life. And, somehow, simply implanting the memories into the robot/creature/whatever it is caused it to look like the dude that was shown in Kevin's memories earlier.
- And there it is. Mega Man's streak is broken. Honestly, it took longer than I thought it would.
- Of course, nobody, not even Kevin, recognizes "Mike Vincent" as being the shadowy "new Game Master" that Mother Brain just showed them, barely half a minute earlier. Anyway, "Mike Vincent" is in Castlevania. So that's cool, I guess they're going to Castlevania now.
- Apparently, Kevin's memories of "Mike Vincent" were enough even to impart his very smell into the fake Game Master robot thing, because Duke is able to lead them all right to it.
- I guess Dracula decided to slum it for a bit, as a member of "Mike"'s "M team." Seems weird, given that he's the big bad of Castlevania and all. But then, Simon punks him out immediately with a camera. So fucking lame.
- Then Mega Man uses that well known move from his games, picking up and throwing a statue, to take out the Frankenstein monster.
- So yeah, the rest of the N Team manages to take out the "M Team" with absolutely no trouble whatsoever. Leaving only "Mike," who uses ZA WARUDO to stop time and capture them.
- "One thousand megabytes of memory, and all of it programmed to get you." This dude's brain is one gigabyte. Sure, one gigabyte seemed impossibly huge in 1990, but now it's laughably small. Just to compare, Windows XP, released only a decade or so later, required at least that much HDD space at bare minimum.
- Unsurprisingly, the android turns on Mother Brain and refuses to obey her orders, thus showing the fruits of overly complicated 80s villain plans, once again.
- Time for another montage!
- Nice detail that the werewolf left behind a floating heart when the android zapped it. That's true to the games, I'll give them that much. The heart is never used for anything or seen again after that, though.
- Drac's back. (Seriously, why is he yellow? I really don't get it.) And he immediately gets owned again, though he does manage to push Kevin out of a window first.
- "Or how about when we dressed up as girls and snuck into Suzie's sleepover party?" Wow. ಠ_ಠ
- The power of friendship wins again. (Metroid theme playing again, more clearly this time.)
- Mother Brain whips out some machine guns (!!!) and blasts "Mike." It's because "Mike" was a robot, you see. It's the same reason the Ninja Turtles were able to go to town on the Foot Clan soldiers in the (1987) cartoon. Those were "only" robots, too. If she'd shot Kevin like she'd been intending, it would've been like that scene from Robocop.
- I'll get serious for a minute, though, and admit that the android's "death" legitimately made me a little sad, back when I originally watched it as a kid. (EDIT) This whole thing, the rewatch I mean, is weird, because when I started this episode, I really didn't remember much of anything about it, but by the end, it was like, yeah, I remember having watched this now. I'm sure there will be some episodes that I actually haven't seen, especially some of the later ones with Gameboy and such. Like, for instance, I knew of the two LoZ episodes I posted about before, but there are apparently two or three more that involve Link and Zelda as well. Maybe I saw those as well but just don't remember them now, or maybe I haven't seen them at all. I guess I'll find out when(/if) I get that far. (/EDIT)
- And... cut to credits.
- So yeah, this was not a Mega Man-centered episode, despite Mega Man being in the thumbnail. But this was the episode where he broke his streak.
