"One of 2023's best-rated JRPGs is nearly here, but..."

Rest of the headline, because Dreamwidth can't handle the whole thing up there: "...you need to play around 658 hours of other games first"

Right, and that is why I will almost assuredly never play either The Legend of Heroes: Trails into Reverie or any of the other games leading up to it. And it's not just the time sink involved to play all the previous games in the series prior to this new one, but also the monetary sink, since I own exactly zero of any of these games at this point in time.

I was fairly sure that I'd written a big, huge, long post about all of this shit at some point in the past, but back when I was going to reference it in a more recent post, I couldn't find it, and I don't feel like trying and failing to find it again, so...

...I'll just give a brief(-ish) summary of it all, again, here.

So, as mentioned in the above linked article, there is the Trails series, which is around 15 games big at this point. Then there is The Legend of Heroes series, of which the Trails series is an offshoot, and which the article shied away from addressing, aside from a throwaway line at the end. And then, not even mentioned in the article at all, there is also the Dragon Slayer series, of which The Legend of Heroes series is an offshoot (which includes games like Xanadu and Faxanadu and Sorcerian). Oh, and there's a crossover game between Trails and Ys. Ys is a whole other thing entirely, i.e. another huge RPG series that I very likely will never play, even though I actually own a fair few Ys games, unlike the Trails/Legend of Heroes/Dragon Slayer games. (The crossover game is "just" a fighting game, though, so doesn't really "count," I guess.)

In any case, most of those are games that I would play if I had infinite time and infinite money, but since I don't have either of those things, I pretty much definitely won't ever be playing any of them.

Yeah that's quite an investment to be able to play going in late, not just the price of the games, but the price of the consoles etc that the various games were on.

I have Faxanadu and one of the Legend of Heroes games "Trails in the Sky" on the PSP. Of which I never finished that one. I think I just tuned the entire franchise out after I heard there was no actual resolution to the one I was playing (that being in a series itself) and thinking the followups were on other systems etc.
