Hmm...
Eagerly-awaited Gamecube title The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess will mark the end of an era for the hit series, according to a transcript of a recent radio interview with Shigeru Miyamoto.
"This will be, without a doubt, the last Zelda game as you know it in its present form," Miyamoto is quoted as saying.
This could be a good thing, if it just means that they'll be going in a new direction with later games. However, if Nintendo has indeed gone completely off their rockers and are ending the Zelda series altogether (which is how I've seen lots of people interpreting this in the few minutes I've spent looking into it since finding the above article)... that's a lot less good. I personally don't think they'll be ending the Zelda series altogether though, since that would be the equivalent of them cutting down a money tree. A tree that is made of money, produces more money in a bountiful fruit form, absorbs money from the soil around it, and uses photosynthesis to convert sunlight into money. Why would anyone cut down such a tree?
They imply later in the same article that Zelda will just be getting an overhaul in the future, as I suspected, rather than ending. Not only that, but it seems that Mario will be getting one as well. I'm guessing most people just read the article far enough to get to the "last Zelda game" line and immediately went into hyper OMGWTF!!! state.

Miyamoto also revealed that Mario is getting a brand new sidekick, but kept firmly schtum on the details.
*cough*whathappenedtoLuigi*cough* ¬_¬
They either need to make a game where you play as Mario with Luigi as the final ultimate boss or (preferably) a game where you play as Luigi with Mario as the final ultimate boss. Maybe Luigi could team up with Donkey Kong or even Bowser for a serious Mario beat down.

Luigi deserves his own games at this point, and not vaccuuming ghosts. I like your idea of teaming up with Mario badguys to beat Mario. It's the subject of countless funny flash (and not so funny flashes) and it deserves some official recognition outside of Smash Bros.
As for the Zelda thing? I'm not worried about it, as you say it's too much of a money maker to be ended permanently. If Samus could do so well branching out I don't see it being a problem for Link (though I can't imagine a genre that would make sense outside of maybe a more traditional RPG (which I seriously doubt)).

As far as Mario goes, it sounds to me like they're adding another Yoshi type character. I've never considered Luigi to be a sidekick, he's just player 2.

As long as it's not another "sidekick" like FLUDD. >_> I liked Super Mario Sunshine well enough for the most part, but that talking nozzle was just damned annoying.

In the earlier games this is true, but in the later games he doesn't even get that much, with the exception of Mario and Luigi: Superstar Saga, and even then there's the in-game joke about how Luigi was just brought along by mistake. Usually, Luigi is either bumped down to even less than sidekick status, like in Paper Mario where he's just a recurring NPC at best, or he's just left out altogether. The guy just doesn't get any respect.

And due to all those years of being virtually ignored or put down upon, he snaps and becomes a better bad guy, than Bowser ever was (see, he's had all this time to study the mistakes, and idly figure out ways to get around them, when he had nothing better to do).
As for the new sidekick, my guess is the Prince from Katamari Damacy. I don't care if it's from a different platform, I just think it'd be cool. ^_^
