Snopes.com shows that both aspects of the "cartoon characters on Facebook" meme are false.
Those two aspects are the "it was started by pedophiles" bit and the "it helps to stop child abuse" bit.

I have no problem with people changing their profile pics to cartoon characters and all just for the heck of doing it, but let's try to be at least a little bit realistic about it. You're not facilitating pedophiles by changing your profile picture any more than you're helping to stop child abuse by doing it.

Personally, I don't think that anyone young enough to be the target of a pedophile should even be using Facebook in the first place, but that's neither here nor there.
