Humm...

I wonder if I should look into maybe trying to take up Unity or GameMaker or RPGMaker (fwiw, I already have Steam licenses for both XP and VX Ace via a past Humble Bundle thing, though I haven't tried using them at all as of yet) or AGS... or maybe try to get back into doing something with TADS or Inform or perhaps the relatively newer RAGS...

From what I remember of messing with TADS several years ago, it was indeed very similar to coding with something like C/C++ or Python or whatever. It's just that what with it being a game engine and all, a lot of the functions are already written for you. Not sure with the newer stuff like Unity or Gamemaker or whatever, as those are likely more visual GUI based, but I'm sure there's still some coding/scripting involved regardless.
