I wonder if I should look into maybe trying to take up Unity or GameMaker or RPGMaker (fwiw, I already have Steam licenses for both XP and VX Ace via a past Humble Bundle thing, though I haven't tried using them at all as of yet) or AGS... or maybe try to get back into doing something with TADS or Inform or perhaps the relatively newer RAGS...

Ah, idle musings... pie in the sky musings...

If you've got the time, why not! Would it be easier with your programming background?

From what I remember of messing with TADS several years ago, it was indeed very similar to coding with something like C/C++ or Python or whatever. It's just that what with it being a game engine and all, a lot of the functions are already written for you. Not sure with the newer stuff like Unity or Gamemaker or whatever, as those are likely more visual GUI based, but I'm sure there's still some coding/scripting involved regardless.

I told you a couple times already that you should. ;)

Koby and I may attempt doing a small rpg using RPGMaker 2003, which is basically a slightly enhanced, legit-translated version of RPGMaker2000. He already has it on steam, I'll probably end up picking it up in a few weeks when I have the money. I have either XP or VX Ace as well when I think about it. The main reason koby's shying away from them is because you apparently need to do a lot of coding in ruby or something to do any scripts for it.

Still, whichever way you go, I agree you should get your feet wet and try to make something. ^^

Is that the same thing you guys were working on from a few years ago? Iirc, at one point I made a loop for you out of part of a Linkin Park song (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lVYr9sKPF8s#t=00m54s) that you'd wanted to use in that as a dungeon theme or some such. Was that still the OW!RPG, or something different?

As for Ruby, I don't know much of anything about it. I'm familiar with Python and Javascript (which I used a little of in my old job), and C/C++ and a very tiny bit of Lua and such, which I used at DigiPen for a class or two. I haven't used any of that stuff in years though, so I'm rather rusty. If I get into this stuff, which still isn't remotely a given at this point, I guess it could be a way to knock some of the rust off, if nothing else. And I figure Ruby probably wouldn't be too awfully dissimilar from the others. Outside of really ancient languages like Fortran or Cobol or whatever, I've found that most of the languages are generally fairly similar, at least until you start getting into the more deep level shit like classes vs prototypes and whatnot. (Back in my old job at one point, I somehow successfully converted a previously written class structure in Python to a Javascript prototype structure such that the driver code could still be used with it without needing to be changed at all, and that shit was a real bitch. >_>;)

Yeah that was intended for OW!RPG back then, although I'm not really aiming to continue with an actual OW!RPG itself (Although having koby and TD running around in it is certainly on the table.)

Still gotta wait til I have the money to buy the 2003 engine since that's what we'll use if anything. And then hope it'll run on one of my two comps. ^^ Since this engine can do mp3s and the like for music, we'll probably use royalty free music from incomptech since there's lots of music to choose from on there.
