"Elite: Dangerous boss says online-only is 'the right decision'"

Of course he's going to say that. Doesn't make it true, and I'm still not buying his game explicitly because of it.

Yes he's full of shit. As are all the people supporting the company still as if they've done nothing wrong. 670+ pages of bitching don't come about as a result of pleased customers.

One of the supporters said as they tried to "explain" the situation,

"A small number of people who don't have internet connections then used their internet connection to complain about it :P"

I never understood this argument. Like somehow the only reason anyone would hate having an online internet connection forced to their game is because they don't have an internet connection.

There are MANY VALID REASONS for not wanting to support a game that has an online requirement, particularly for single player games. And none of those are due to the absence of having an internet connection. (And some people in the situation are far more concerned about the bait and switch being pulled - the company's now apparent lack of commitment to their backers and lack of business ethics - more so than the removal itself.)

And all of these people involved with Elite that hate the removal of the offline mode HAVE internet. IT WAS FUNDED ON AN ONLINE WEBSITE AND THE ONLY WAY TO SIGN UP/FUND/PREORDER IT WAS VIA ONLINE METHODS. Of course they have connections. But that doesn't mean they wanted to use those connections for game DRM, for a game that can be taken down on the whim of the developer.

The developers promise to make snapshots of the game "From time to time" and if they ever turn off their servers, they'll release the latest snapshot... so they say. But at this point:

1. They've already shown they'll do a complete 180 on their promises.

2. The only reason they'll turn off the servers is if it becomes unprofitable (Which I see it doing within 5 years tops) and if they don't have something new to sell after that, it probably shows they're going to be going bankrupt at the time. And in bankrupt proceedings, it's not the developers choice to release or not release a snapshot.
