*tired, apathetic sigh*

Square Enix apparently just cannot release anything these days that isn't infested with malware. And by "malware," of course, I mean Denuvo.

That thing there showed up on the little "Steam News" window that sometimes pops up when you first launch the Steam client. I clicked on it, out of idle curiosity, and the first thing I did was to look to see who published it, then I scrolled down a bit to see if the infection warning was there, and sure enough, as I expected given that it's Square Enix, the ugly little brown-orange-tan-babyshit-diarrhea colored label was there. So I immediately closed the window and wrote the game off entirely. That was less than two minutes ago as of the time I started writing this post. And at this exact moment, as I type this sentence, if you asked me what the name of that game was, I literally could not tell you without clicking or merely mousing over that link in the preview window to check (or, you know, just glancing up at the URL html code in the Dreamwidth edit window, which I'm trying hard not to do and have thus far been successful), because I've already mostly forgotten everything about the game. Crystal something, maybe? Okay, now I'll check. Nope, I was way off, not Crystal anything. Anyway, that's what Denuvo does, at least for me. It makes me try to immediately and entirely forget the existence of games that I know are contaminated with that shit, because I will never knowingly and willingly buy such games. And in the very unlikely event that even one game developer/publisher somehow happens to stumble across this post (or any of the others), and it makes them change their mind and decide not to include that fucking dogshit in their game, then I will have accomplished something for the ever so slight betterment of the modern video game industry.

(The only, only thing that I will give Square Enix credit for is that they've put the malware warning on the game months in advance of its release. THIS TIME, at least, because they have, scummily, not always done that in the past.)

"Final Fantasy Intergatcha | Castle Super Beast Clips"

"Finally coming to the personal computer."

I love how they just completely sandbagged/no sold/utterly ignored the unfortunate fact that FF7R was exclusive to Epic Shit Store for a year before coming to Steam. Like, seriously, I truly, legitimately love that, no sarcasm.

Fuck Epic Scuzz Store.

FINAL FANTASY VII REMAKE INTERGRADE

Ah, so Final Fantasy VII Remake has finally crawled out of the putrid pit of exclusivity that is the Epic Shit Store? Well, that's great, I guess. Wake me up when it doesn't cost $50 USD even with a 30% off discount.

(EDIT) More accurately, wake me up when all three (or however many it ends up being) parts are fully released, are no longer exclusive to PS5, are also no longer exclusive to Epic Diarrhea Store on PC, and don't cost seventy fucking dollars each. For real, though, with each part individually going through these goddamn asinine exclusivity deals, apparently, it's going to take literally at least another decade or so before it ever reaches a state where I'd be remotely willing to bother with it. "Square Enix sells much of their Western IP to go into the blockchain market"

(EDIT)

Heh, I should have waited a bit.

"Square Enix has sold off Tomb Raider and other Western game IPs/studios in order to fund NFT games."

Yeah, pretty much what Ian and Pat said there.

Fuck, I haven't even bought and won't be buying Final Fantasy XV due to Denuvo horseshit, and Dragon Quest XI was also on that list for a while (mind you, I still haven't bought that yet, either, even after they removed that malware), so I'm absolutely sure as shit not ever going to buy a Final Fantasy or Dragon Quest game that has NFT dumbfuckery shoehorned into it, either.

(/EDIT)

Headline above paraphrased due to Dreamwidth's ineluctable text-length restrictions. Proper headline: "Video game company Square Enix agrees to sell much of their Western IP so they can go into the blockchain market"

Ah. So that is the reason why they did it? Huh. Okay. It's even stupider than I had guessed. I saw the news of Squeenix selling a bunch of shit in several articles via the news reader on my phone a day or two ago, but it honestly didn't interest me all that much, so I didn't bother to actually tap to read any of them at the time.

Relevant Kotaku article linked to via the web3isgoinggreat blurb above: "NFT Market Collapses Just As Square Enix Sells Tomb Raider To Bet Big On Blockchain"[1]

Welp. All I can say in response to that: Requiescat in defricatus urina, Square Enix. You totally deserve it.

[1] - Also, as an aside, John Walker writes for Kotaku now? Meh, all the more reason for me to avoid Kotaku, I guess. (Outside of this one singular case, in which I mostly agree with him on the subject of how asinine NFTs are, in general, and how blockheaded Squeenix was to go whole hog on the blockchain bullshit, in particular.)

So, apparently, the PC "remaster" of Chrono Cross is terrible.

Gee, imagine that. *eyeroll + weary sigh*

Oh well, at the very least, it is not infested with Denuvo like everything else that Squeenix has released on PC lately. (Or if it is, it's not properly labeled as such on the Steam store page, anyway.)

I'll still probably get it eventually, when they've had time to fix issues. Also, when it's on sale for at least 50% off (which would bring it below $10 USD from the current price).

The Chrono Cross remaster is indeed going to be on Steam.

Embedded tweets ranting again about Denuvo and pre-purchasing behind cut )

Slightly easier link.

And, yeah, it's probably going to be infected with Denuvo, at least for a while immediately after release, which is why I'm not as excited for this as I otherwise would have been.

"Final FaNFT | Castle Super Beast Clips"

Woolie: "There's definitely an energy of quiet dread, on Twitter at the very least, where it's, like, okay, which company is going to come out and disappoint you today?"

That, essentially, should be how everyone feels, all the time, about the modern video game industry nowadays, in my not at all humble opinion. If everyone did perpetually feel that way about all the odious dumbshit that the modern video game industry continually sharts out, then maybe, just maybe, the modern video game industry would be forced to stop sharting out all that odious dumbshit, and then everyone wouldn't have to feel that way anymore (at least until the odious dumbshit inevitably started up again after everyone let their guards down).

Too bad that's not the case, though, for most people, i.e. the ones who have their lips surgically attached directly to the anus of the modern video game industry. It's kind of like a human centipede, except all of the followers are each attached to the first guy rather than in a sequence. Also, it's completely willing and voluntary in this case, unlike in those wretched movies.

"FFXIV: Pool's Closed | Castle Super Beast Clips"

Even ignoring the fact that FFXIV is a MMO, meaning that I already had zero interest in it to begin with, any game that requires you to wait in a fucking line for an hour or more before you can actually play it is a game that I will never be buying, let alone playing, I don't give a fuck how ostensibly good said game may be, especially if they are literally saying that, no, you physically cannot buy the game right now even if you wanted to, because they apparently have too many players already. Also, unlike these guys, I don't see it as a sign that the game is wildly successful, I see it instead as a sign that the devs/pubs royally fucked up and didn't properly plan to have enough capacity to let the people who wanted to play the game, you know, play the fucking game. If they can fuck up something that important, who's to say they won't fuck up other shit in the future.

"Chrono Cross Promotion | Castle Super Beast Clips"

I'd be okay with a remake or remaster of Chrono Cross (and/or Xenogears). Do I think it's going to actually happen? I won't believe it until I see it.

That said, in any case, I almost assuredly would not buy it on PC (meaning that I wouldn't buy it at all, given that I don't own any consoles), given that it would be a modern Square Enix game, and as such, the likelihood of it being infested with Denuvo (or something equally terrible) is around 99.9999%. After all, it wouldn't be the first time that a remake of an old-ass Square Enix game was contaminated with such dogshit.

What a shitload of fuck

So, apparently, Rise of the Tomb Raider and Shadow of the Tomb Raider on PC were patched to remove Denuvo (even though the Steam pages for both still currently have the Denuvo label right there)... only for the Denuvo to be replaced with "Epic Online Services," whatever the fuck that is, which apparently requires you to create an account with Epic (even if you bought it through Steam) if you want to play them now. In other words, Square Enix simply traded one flavor of rancid diarrhea for another.

Both Rise and Shadow pretty much would have been almost no-brainer purchases for me, honestly, had Square Enix just not opted to infest them with all this worse-than-useless third party DRM horseshit.

Worse than that, though, they apparently tried/are trying to shoehorn that same Epic Online Services dumbfuckery into the original (remake) Tomb Raider game as well, after the fact. I.e. the only one of the games that I actually own on Steam myself, due to having not bought the two sequels because of the Denuvo malware.

Seriously, Square Enix can eat a truckload of shit at this point, for all I care about them anymore. And Denuvo and Epic can eat truckloads of shit simply for existing, to boot.

(Not going to bother providing links for any of that, but it's easy enough to Google.)

Blood Omen: Legacy of Kain on GOG

Well... I have to say, it's about damn time. Now, I can finally complete the series, considering that I own every other LoK game[1] on there.

[1] - Interestingly, even though I have it in my game list, Soul Reaver is currently not available for purchase on GOG, ostensibly because "Square Enix has temporarily removed this title from sale to work on some important updates." Apparently, from what I can glean from the forums, the games are incredibly broken. Go figure. (Also, as an aside, I can recall when the Legacy of Kain games were not "Square Enix games." Big companies swallowing up smaller companies will never not be terrible for the video games industry, in the long run.)

Legend of Mana on Steam

So, I noticed just now that I had put Legend of Mana on my Steam wishlist, because I saw the little wishlist symbol on it in the "Featured and Recommended" thing on the Steam front page, so I checked out the page for the game.

It has Denuvo. Meaning that I immediately removed it from my wishlist.

I found this strange, though, because I was pretty sure that it hadn't indicated that it would have Denuvo when I added it to my wishlist a while back, back before the game came out. I checked on the Steam forums for the game, and apparently they waited until just before release, long after pre-orders had started, to add the Denuvo notification to the Steam page.

As such, I think it might be time for me to just blanket boycott Square-Enix entirely, at this point.

New Life is Strange game?

Okay, that's cool, I guess? But then, I haven't touched LIS2 yet because it has Denuvo (even though I already made the mistake of buying it, back before I was aware that Denuvo was a thing, or else I wouldn't have bought it either). So, does this new one have Denuvo? It sure does. I mean, of course it does. Why wouldn't it? It's a newly released game by Square-Enix on PC, after all. Guess I won't be buying this one at all, then. *shrug*

And I wouldn't bet against the upcoming remaster of the first game also having that malware shoehorned into it, either, even though it doesn't (yet) say it does or will on the Steam page.

Granted, if you don't care about Denuvo, I suppose this would be wonderful news. *shrug*

(EDIT) Of course, all the dumbfuck assholes hate the game because it's supposedly "woke." Go figure. (/EDIT)

"Battle at the Big Bridge"

I think if I had to pick just one piece of music from the entire Final Fantasy series as my favorite, it would probably be "Battle at the Big Bridge" (aka "Gilgamesh's Theme").

So, here, have the Wayback version of that video that got removed by Squeenix.

And it's gone.

So they're making a new Nier game, huh?[1] Well, that's cool I guess and it has Denuvo.

Nah, I'm just playing around. I knew it was going to have Denuvo before I even scrolled down to confirm that it will have Denuvo. After all, the previous game has Denuvo (EDIT) now removed, thank goodness (/EDIT), and pretty much every other new-ish game Square-Enix publishes has Denuvo, so why the fuck wouldn't this game have Denuvo, too? In any case, Denuvo is why I removed Automata and whatever other Squeenix games from my Steam wishlist, so I'm not going to be expending much future thought on this game here after pressing the "post" button on this, either, much less contaminate my wishlist with it.

As always, to hell with the modern video game industry.

[1] - Well, actually, it's just the original Nier, but "remastered," and the story changed (or reverted?) so that Nier is Yonah's brother instead of her father.

Regarding Denuvo, I figured it would happen eventually...

...or, rather, has already happened.

Looks like I've already bought a game that contains Denuvo, without realizing it until now. *weary fucking sigh*

Found out via randomly browsing this curator on Steam (which I now follow), and then when I checked the Life is Strange 2 Steam page itself, sure enough, it is flagged as containing that fucking malware.[1]

Bought it back in May (which means it's far too late to refund now or I would do so) when it was on sale, but before I'd really started more consistently paying attention to this shit. God fucking damn it. Well, I guess I'll just be marking it as a new category of "CONTAINS DENUVO DO NOT INSTALL" in the Steam client itself, as well as hiding it. Fucking hell.

Oh well, I never got much past the first episode of the original Life is Strange anyway, so it would have been a while, if ever, before I got to Life is Strange 2 (not that that really matters, since apparently the second game has little to do with the first one). And now, I'll never be getting to Life is Strange 2, at least not while it contains the Denuvo malware. Hell, this even makes me not want to ever try to replay the first game or its follow-up (which I also own on Steam but haven't played yet, due to not having finished the original) now, either, even though those don't contain the malware Denuvo. (EDIT 2) No, wait, Before the Storm apparently used to have Denuvo in it, so I can't really trust it either, now. Jesus Christ. (/EDIT 2)

(EDIT) And, fucking goddamn it, even Captain Spirit contains Denvuo, even though that was a fucking free game intended as a promo for Life is Strange 2. Glad I never got around to playing it, either. Seriously... malware DRM in a fucking free game. Fucking why?! (/EDIT)

(EDIT 3) Looks like Yakuza 0 is "no longer using Denuvo," as well, and I'd played the hell out of that a year ago or so. I have to wonder now if it had the malware in it when I was playing it, though I'm pretty sure it had already been (ostensibly) removed by that point, but still... I really wish I'd been paying more attention to this kind of shit back then. (/EDIT 3)

(EDIT 4) No, wait, found another fucking one that I'd already bought a while back (but fortunately haven't tried to play yet). What a fuckload of shit. So that's another one for the new "CONTAINS DENUVO DO NOT INSTALL" category. (/EDIT 4)

To fucking hell forever with the modern video game industry.

[1] - And I don't give a fuck how many times it's claimed that Denuvo isn't malware by reputation management drones or trolls or game developers or other such asshats, it's fucking malware. Just because it is supposedly a "sanctioned" malware, i.e. "signed drivers" or what the fuck ever, doesn't mean it's not still fucking malware. All that means is that Denuvo has enough sway in the industry to become "sanctioned," because developers love it (at the expense of the actual user/purchaser of the developers' product, but then, anti-consumer bullshit has become part and parcel of the modern video game industry, so fucking *SHRUG* I guess).

Denuvo and my Steam Wishlist

I've combed through my Steam Wishlist and deleted every game that Steam claims contains Denuvo.

Here is the list of games that I have removed from my Steam Wishlist (in the order they had been on the list [EDIT 3] Also reformatted into a proper unordered list now. [/EDIT 3]):

(EDIT) I will go back occasionally and put a strikethrough on the games on this list that I've noticed have removed the malware. That said, it's still not very likely that I'll ever buy any of these games, regardless. At most, I may re-add them to my wishlist and maybe buy them if I ever see them on some ridiculous <$10 sale, possibly. (/EDIT)

Most of those are like, meh, whatever... but a few of those were games I had been really looking forward to, so it stung a bit to have to remove them.

This list does not include games that I had already previously removed or had never added in the first place (or, rather, had added only very briefly before immediately removing again).

This also doesn't (yet) include any potential games that contain/will contain Denuvo but for which the developer/publisher are hoping to hide that fact by not listing it on the Steam page.

"A Whale of a Tale"

"I am currently $15,800 in debt. My wife no longer trusts me. My kids, who ask me why I am playing Final Fantasy all the time, will never understand how I selfishly spent money I should have been using for their activities. Their birthdays, their festivals, their clothes, their school events, their weekends, their movies.

I have never spent more than $1000 on my wife at one time. I spent $16,000 on digital garbage in about a year. If she decides that she will not divorce me, I owe her more that I could ever repay. I am not playing anymore. I will not get Cloud. I will leave 500K lapis in an account that will stay idle. The 'friends' I have will drop me as my days since last played increases. I will not get to beat Marlboro. I will not see how Chapter 2 plays out. I will not have any 7* units. FFBE is over.

I became a gambling addict over a game where there is no return, no reward, for spending my money."

Yeah... I don't think it needs to be said, but I'll say it again anyway: the modern video game industry is utter garbage. While (I would assume, or at least hope) most people play games more responsibly than this guy, it's still the case that games like this actively encourage this sort of behavior. Game developers explicitly design their games to be as addictive as possible, knowing that some people just cannot help themselves. They bank on it. It is beyond the pale.

This, at least in part, is why I have forever ranted and railed against all the disgusting DLC and microtransaction horseshit like this that is in far too many games these days. Fuck the modern video game industry and, fair or not, I will also say fuck the players like this guy here who make it a worthwhile, sustainable endeavor for the video game industry to operate like this in the first place.

"Square Enix: DRM is 'essential for the foreseeable future'"

Sure, if you say so. And I won't be buying any Square Enix games for the foreseeable future, especially if they're going to defend their use of DRM with the same banal arguments that didn't hold water a decade ago. Simple enough.

"Square Enix expects 'extraordinary loss' this fiscal year, CEO steps down"

CEOs of increasingly shitty game companies stepping down due to financial losses by their companies? This is the beginnings of a trend that I could totally get behind. The only thing that remains to be seen is if this is a good trend (i.e. the successor comes in and realizes that they need to stop doing the stupid stuff that lost them all that money) or a bad trend (i.e. the successor comes in and places an even greater emphasis on "grr piracy bad need more DRM" or "hey let's make even more money by removing half of our game from the base game and only making it available as extra DLC" and other stupid shit like that).

(EDIT)

Also, one need only look at the comments under that PC Gamer article to see just how incredibly clueless the average gamer apparently is about this sort of thing. One guy actually said (direct quote, typos and all): "No!They are one of the few publishers who cares more for singleplayer rather than multipalyer..." Seriously, guy? Really, this is proof positive of why these companies are able to do the asinine shit that they do and get away with it, because the average consumer is absolutely oblivious. And that's terrible.

Then again, on the other hand, given that they're starting to see "extraordinary losses" lately, maybe it's not so bad as that. Maybe people are starting to wise up? One can but hope.

(/EDIT)

(EDIT 2)

Full disclosure: I am currently playing through the latest Tomb Raider game on the 360, because a co-worker let me borrow it. (I didn't ask him for it. He offered, and I simply said sure, why not.) It's pretty cool, I guess, but at the same time I'm kind of glad I didn't shell out anything to get it myself. After I play through it once on Easy mode, I'll give it back to my co-worker and probably never think about it again. If I ever get it at all, it will probably only be if I can get the PC version on Steam for dirt cheap at some point in the distant future. (Also, I'm hoping that if I do get the PC version, maybe I'll actually be able to read the damn text on the screen rather than merely seeing something like this that can barely be read because it's far too tiny on my old-ass television. But then, that's yet another problem with a lot of current gen games, not just Tomb Raider.)

Also, to the guy above who said that Square-Enix cares more for singleplayer rather than multiplayer: all DLC for that game will be multiplayer only.

Now, I am not inherently against DLC. I have played some awesome DLC such as Undead Nightmare for Red Dead Redemption. It's almost as good as the base game itself was. And it is what all DLC should be, i.e. stuff that was definitely made after the main game was long since completed, rather than stuff that was blatantly and obviously cut from the main game for the explicit purpose of being DLC. Some of the DLC for Fable 2 was pretty interesting too, though not quite as awesome as Undead Nightmare was. (Sadly, I'm trying to come up with other examples of decent DLC, but I'm failing to recall anything besides that.)

But useless multiplayer "map-pack" DLCs can kiss my ass and die in a fire. Granted, maybe that's just my distaste for multiplayer in general talking there, but yeah. Screw that.

(/EDIT 2)
