The first RPG that I ever played, on any system (specifically, my high school best friend's Sega CDX), back before I really knew what a RPG even was (J or C or otherwise). https://t.co/7fiPrq6mit

The second RPG I ever played, and first I ever personally owned, on a system that I actually owned myself. Even after having played through Vay, though, I still didn't truly know what I was getting into with this one. https://t.co/lBxYyRwtq8

After that, it was like a whole new world had opened up. Final Fantasy, Chrono Trigger, Lunar, Phantasy Star, then came the PS1 era, PS2 era, and onward.

And then, on PC, I happened upon a game called Baldur's Gate. https://t.co/Kv5shu0iBH
At that point, it was a like another, completely different, separate world had opened up. Planescape: Torment, Icewind Dale, Neverwinter Nights, Might and Magic, Ultima, The Elder Scrolls, Fallout, etc.

I mean, I'll play pretty much anything once, but left to my own devices, I'll pick a RPG over most anything else just about anytime.

The only other genre I like as much as RPGs are adventure games (and which I played years before I ever knew about Vay). The first of those I ever played (inappropriately enough, when I was 10 or so), was Leisure Suit Larry 2 (followed quickly by LSL1). https://t.co/7rOdD4Okkt

Be they old school text-parser or the "newer" point-and-click variety, I've gone though a ton of those, too. King's Quest, Space Quest, Police Quest, Quest for Glory, Gabriel Knight, Monkey Island, Day of the Tentacle, The Longest Journey, etc.

Basically, I prefer games that focus on story and grand adventure, that kind of stuff. Beat-em-ups and fighting games and FPS games are fine for what they are, but given the choice, I'll play a RPG or an adventure game over those every single time.

The main exception to that is the X series of space sim/trader games, which I've never really stopped playing, off and on, ever since I first discovered them a decade ago. https://t.co/ALlEElLvyk

Aside from X, though, I can't say that I'm a huge fan of the space sim genre, in general. Freelancer was pretty good, and I liked Star Control II (the version I played being The Ur Quan Masters remake), but beyond that, they start to seem kind of same-y to me.

And... beyond all that, if I'm in the mood for something other than RPGs or adventure games, I'll go with a Metroidvania game or a free-roam, open world game like Red Dead Redemption 2. Though I prefer the ones that have RPG elements to them, like stat-building and such.

Not sure what brought this thread on, really. I just happened to be listening to the Vay soundtrack and wanted to post about it, and it all kind of ballooned from there. Anyway, it's after 2:00am EDT now, so I should probably go to bed. ¬_¬
