We got here because the modern video game industry became a steaming, festering pool of diarrhetic elephant shit over the past decade or two, and this here is only one symptom among dozens of how that is the case.
The fact that games can "die" in the first place is utterly asinine. Maybe don't introduce yet another banal fucking MMO or MOBA or "battle royal" or whatever shitty multiplayer-only game into an already grossly oversaturated market. Maybe don't shoehorn online features into otherwise singleplayer games, arbitrarily decide to turn off and get rid of said features only a few years later, and then whine about how nobody buys or plays your goddamned games anymore.
