The whole Manhunt 2 thing.
Jun. 21st, 2007 05:25 pmSo, for those who haven't already heard, Manhunt 2 has been banned in the UK and given an AO rating here in the US, which is tantamount to a ban, since most stores won't sell AO games, and, more importantly, both Nintendo and Sony have said they won't allow AO games (or, at least, an AO rated Manhunt 2) on their respective consoles.
While this has caused an uproar in some circles, my only real regret about the whole situation is that the game in question had to be Manhunt 2, otherwise I could give more of a crap about it. I mean, yeah, it sucks that the game is basically getting banned by a few wussy Big Brother types who don't think that adults should be allowed to decide for themselves what video games they can play, but... ...it's Manhunt 2, for crying out loud. I'm not saying that the game deserves to be banned, and I'm not saying that I'm okay with it being banned, I'm just saying that... well... I don't give a flying crap about Manhunt 2. The whole banning situation, in general, irritates me, sure, which is why I'm posting about it here, but the fact that it is Manhunt 2 that was the catalyst for it also irritates me. Also, the fact that many people are now saying things like "Oh I'm definitely getting this game now, you know, just on principle alone, even though I didn't really care about it before" is pretty irritating as well.
Hell, I wouldn't bet money against the idea that this whole thing was just a ploy orchestrated by Rockstar to drum up interest in their game, and that they already have a toned down M-rated version ready to go, once the hullabaloo and free advertising for their game has died down. If, indeed, that were true, I would be simultaneously disgusted with Rockstar and also impressed by their ability to manipulate these tools (i.e. the guys doing the banning as well as the guys planning to buy the game "just on principle") for their own ends.
And, yes, I fully realize that I have just contributed to said hullabaloo and free advertising for Manhunt 2.
(UPDATE)
Also, Jack Thompson. I'm actually surprised it took him this long to spew his opinion at us on this matter. I'd have figured he would have been all over this one from the get go. *eyeroll*

(UPDATE 2)
This, on the other hand, is something that I could totally get behind. (EDIT) Too bad it never went anywhere. Guess Destructoid was too busy being "edgy and cool" with their reviews and such to actually put any real effort into this. This makes sense, given that it was apparently David Houghton and Jim Sterling who were spearheading this thing, and after Houghton left, that only left Sterling behind to do anything with it. And I think I've already made more than clear what a cock-up Jim Sterling has been lately. (/EDIT)
