The Path was released today, at 9:00pm PST. I'd been following this one for a year or two now. I downloaded it via Steam. $10. There's also a direct installer download as well, but this wasn't there when I first visited the site, so I got the Steam version. I'd rather have gotten the direct install, but oh well. *shrug*
So, I've played it a couple of hours and... well... I'm not sure what to make of it yet. I'll just describe my first two playthroughs so far:
( Spoilers, but kind of vague )
So, generally speaking, the basic premise of the game seems to be to pick one of the girls and just... wander around. Find things and do things with them. I'm sure if you futz around too much you'll run into the wolf. I'm guessing this is probably bad, but it hasn't happened to me yet. And I've gotten "Failure!" both times so far and didn't encounter him, so... I don't know?
One fault I had with the game was that during the second playthrough, as I was wandering around more, the game gradually became slower and more laggy. Lowering the graphics settings seemed to have little to no affect on making it less slow and laggy (though didn't really make it much more slow and laggy either *shrug*). It was rather annoying. I'm guessing there's a memory leak somewhere.
There are four other girls left to try, and stuff still left to find/do with the two I've already tried. The setting/music/ambiance is suitably surreal and freaky, but it's nothing approaching Silent Hill or anything like that (at least, out of what little I've personally experienced thus far, but some of the trailers seem to indicate some pretty freaky stuff hidden about). I'm still not sure quite what to make of it yet, but I leaning toward a thumbs up. I'm certainly going to be playing it some more.
