Note to self, for future reference: Self, if you ever come upon a situation again where you are running a game and the keyboard mysteriously doesn't work (partially), first check to see if the Synergy service is still running in the background, because that is most likely the cause of the problem. That was the case this time, Self, so the hours of troubleshooting and online searches for a solution that you did this time around should hopefully be unnecessary in the future. If, however, in future cases, the Synergy service is not running and you're still having similar problems, then, Self, I am afraid you are probably shit outta luck and will need to start from square one again as far as trying to diagnose and troubleshoot shit.
So yeah, now that I'm not talking to myself anymore... that's what happened. I tried to play a few games and had the frustrating experience of noting that the WASD and arrow keys didn't function in some of them (not all of them, only some of them). Then I spent hours trying to fix this shit, including disconnecting and reconnecting the keyboard multiple times, uninstalling and reinstalling drivers, and so on and so forth ad nauseam. In the end, it turned out that the Synergy service was still running, which was causing the fuck up. I had Synergy running last week when I was doing some updates on my laptop, in preparation for taking it to my sister's house for a week to house-sit (and help take care of my elderly mother) while my sister and her husband went on vacation. Apparently, simply shutting down Synergy doesn't close the service. You have to actively stop the Synergy server from running before closing the program. How utterly vexing this was, until it suddenly wasn't and now everything seems to work again like it should.
