"Do new video games get too much hype before release?"

Before watching, my answer: Yes, but not all that much more than some books, movies, TV shows, musical albums, sporting events, or "sporting" events do, for those who care about such things. It's just that video games tend to be, more consistently than not, huge fucking disappointments when they're finally released.

After watching: Pretty much what they said, yeah. And I'm right there with them as far as not really giving a shit about a game that's announced years in advance. If a game actually lives up to the hype, then that's great and all, but nowadays, I usually just assume a game is going to be shit on release, and for a while after release (and possibly forever), and simply don't pay much attention to it.

I used to be that way, though, i.e. the type to get hyped about a game well in advance of its release, but not anymore. Like with, say, The Last Guardian. That's probably the last game I got really super excited about. I have not, still to this day, touched the The Last Guardian at all, or even seen more than maybe thirty minutes of gameplay from The Last Guardian, but back when that game was first announced for the PS3 in... 2007(?), I was super hyped. And that hype just died a little more and a little more the longer it took to come out, and by the time it was announced that the game would be bumped up to the PS4 instead of coming out on the PS3, I pretty much stopped caring. By the time it was released in December 2016 (almost a decade later), I had already stopped caring about consoles entirely, for the most part, let alone any one particular game for them. Someday, if I ever get a PS4 or a PS5 or a PS6 or whatever console that can play it in the future, I'll probably get it and play it, along with whatever other games I've been missing out on due to not giving a shit about consoles anymore, but aside from instances like this, I haven't even thought about The Last Guardian since... well, whenever the last time was that I posted about it on this blog, probably years ago (I'm not going to bother to comb back through old entries to find it, that's how little I care, at this point).

And for games released today, I don't care how big, huge, and overhyped it may be, I'll usually wait several years after its release date to buy it (assuming I care enough to buy it at all), when it is A) much cheaper, B) more likely to have all the broken shit fixed, and C) more likely to have most of the content added in that was promised but not actually there at launch. At most, if I see a game that I might be a bit interested in, I may make a token post mentioning it, then I mostly forget about it until I see it on a Steam sale years later or something. (I finally got FO4 GOTY version for less than $20 back in June 2020, though I still haven't played it all that much to this day. Steam says 11 hours, which for a Fallout game isn't much at all.)
