Sadly, it's not that astounding. Try looking up a study conducted by Stanley Milgram, a social psychologist, about how obedient people are. It was done prior to 1970.
There's an article by Philip Meyer in Esquire from ~1970 on that study called "If Hitler Asked You to Electrocute a Stranger, Would You? Probably".
It's an interesting look at how Americans do what they're told because it was told by an authority-ish figure.
