I'd briefly considered Mega Man but didn't originally include them because I was thinking that they wouldn't sound "water level"-y enough (well, that and the fact that I simply haven't played all that many Mega Man games, and I was more going with stuff I'm more familiar with). And while that's true of some of those, some of the others do have enough of a "water level" vibe to them.
