"With a national conversation underway about the possibility of impeachment, John Oliver discusses whether the benefits outweigh the potential risks."

(Probably ephemeral) alternative links due to asinine region-locking bullshit.

I could maybe get behind John Oliver's "we need to take a stand, good or bad, win or lose, and if we don't do that, it might be even worse" stance. I can totally see where he's coming from with that. In my heart, I am with him all the way, one hundred percent.

Yet, at the same time, in my head, I think that getting Trump out of office, and, thus, out of his ostensibly invincible above-the-law-can't-be-indicted bubble, so that he could then be immediately charged with (and hopefully convicted of) all of his myriad crimes, is way more important than just making a statement via impeachment. And, hell, getting Trump into a position where he can be charged and convicted is, itself, a beautiful statement, no matter how it comes about. As such, beating him in the 2020 election, at least right now, seems to me to be the potentially most effective and expedient way to get that done. Impeachment, however, is probably way more likely to actively hinder the removal of Trump from office than it is to make that a reality, either via the impeachment itself or via the election. Impeachment might make Trump's critics feel all warm and fuzzy for a bit, but in the end it will almost assuredly be counterproductive, when (not if, when) the Mitch McConnell-led Senate clears him of everything, rather than convicts him, which would make Trump more popular with the belligerent troglodytes who will always support him no matter what, as well as with those who, against all reason, are still somehow teetering on the fence on the whole Trump thing, which would probably increase the odds that he will get re-elected. Regardless of any other considerations, the very last thing this country and the world needs is four more hellish years of Donald Jackass Trump badly playacting as POTUS.

The only way a Trump impeachment could ultimately be a good thing all around would be if the Republican senators actually find their wayward senses of ethics and morality, as well as grow spines, and do the right thing, for once in their damned lives. The odds of them actually doing that, though, are even less than the odds of Trump gracefully stepping down of his own accord, I think. And, also, only if the new President Pence (because Mike fucking Pence would become the POTUS if Trump were impeached and convicted, never forget that) refrained from immediately pardoning Trump, which would just negate the whole damned thing. (Well, I mean, it wouldn't negate Trump's removal from being the President, but it would negate him ever facing justice for his vast number of crimes.)

What comes after Trump, no matter how the Trump farce itself ends up playing out, had fucking better be some improved laws that will get rid of all this goddamned asinine above-the-law-can't-be-indicted bullshit that surrounds the presidency now, which I hope will be followed by Presidents who, you know, are not blatant, obvious criminals like Trump is.
