"If you want your entire bibliography to be equally popular and acclaimed, write one book."
I agree with the basic premise, i.e. putting a book into the public domain isn't going to magically make it hugely more popular.
As far as Heinlein specifically... *shrug* ...Starship Troopers[1] is the only work of his that I've read in its entirety, and it was pretty good. My sister had The Number of the Beast in the bathroom for a week or two a while back, and I'd pick it up and skim through when I was in there, but I haven't read it cover to cover, and based on what little I read of it, I didn't and don't particularly care to read the whole thing. I haven't looked at anything else he's written. I'd probably like it, mostly, if I did, but I have no burning desire to actively seek it out. I would not have any greater desire to read his stuff if it were in the public domain than I do now. Unless, maybe, I could get it for free on Kindle or some shit, but even then... I've downloaded a shit-ton of free public domain stuff on there that I haven't even touched yet. But I don't even care enough to go to the library and check his stuff out, either. *another shrug*
[1] - Still haven't seen and don't really care to see the movie. If ever a movie needed a more faithful-to-the-book remake, it would be Starship Troopers, from all I've heard about it.
