I mean, he probably shouldn't have ever been "in" at Unity to start with, but better late than never?

Or is the phrase I'm looking for actually "too little too late"? Yeah, it's probably more that second one.

Unity is proper fucked, regardless of whether Riccitiello stays or goes. I'm still never going to use Unity for anything at all ever, doesn't matter what shitgibbon they may have in charge. Also, wake me up when the rest of the board at Unity follows Riccitiello out the door, because you know this wasn't all on just his head, despite his rancid history.

(EDIT) They've apparently brought in some "private equity firm" ghoul to replace him. Yeah, Unity's done and gone. (EDIT 2) Huh, as it turns out, at least according to Wikipedia, Riccitiello himself started out as a private equity ghoul. So I guess this is more a lateral move at worst. (/EDIT 2) (/EDIT)

I saw that a day or so ago, but my answer to it is "Sorry, the damage is already done. I ain't looking at Unity for development ever again." And given all the essential "spyware" functionality the installers of Unity games will essentially have in order to confirm to the Mothership that a new installation has occurred, I may just stop buying Unity based games period. (Devs beware I guess, not that I'd even be a blip on anyone's radar.) In the end I have too many games to play, so any excuse to add shit to the boycott list is fair game to me.

Also I wouldn't be too surprised if John was already planning on leaving prior to all these changes - a tactic sometimes used by companies is to have outgoing management do unpopular changes so they have a scapegoat for everything - and those unpopular changes end up going through with less resentment since "well the person who did it is already fired!" (even though he/she wouldn't be fired, but instead given their golden parachute and away they descend on another unsuspecting company.)

If he was FIRED rather than RESIGNED then we could say they were actually punishing the guy for the shit he did. But that's not the case - and you'd have to fire a lot of board members who supported the new fee scam as well, which surprise surprise hasn't happened.

From the sounds of the new person coming in though I don't expect any better at Unity, so it's probably a safe bet for me to just say fuck it entirely with anything Unity-based.
