As someone who has both read and written fan fiction, I can kind of see that, if I squint and tilt my head a little bit. It ain't gonna suddenly get me to start playing sports games (or sports manager games) or to start caring about real life sports (or to watch that Challengers movie, which I'd never heard of prior to that Polygon article there) or anything, but sure. *shrug*
