This is exactly the kind of problem I meant when I pointed out that the Supreme Court was no longer a legitimate governing body, and was going to cause problems, after President Obama was denied his right to appoint a judge.

At this particular point in time, I'm not sure that any branch of the federal government, the judicial along with the legislative and (especially) the executive, could be considered a legitimate governing body anymore. Almost every bit of it now, willingly or not, serves no purpose other than to prop up the ridiculous travesty that is "President" Donald Trump. I don't think that will even potentially begin to change for the better until (for a start) Trump is gone for good. Or until this country as a whole wises up and realizes that Trump, and anything even remotely Trump-like, is not what this country needs or will ever need (or has ever needed), actively works to remove the stain, and takes whatever steps are necessary to prevent any similar stains from happening again.

And yeah, the Merrick Garland thing is a big part of why I (used to) believe that Mitch "The single most important thing we want to achieve is for President Obama to be a one-term president"/"One of my proudest moments was when I told Obama, 'You will not fill this Supreme Court vacancy'" McConnell was even worse than Trump. That opinion has changed in the last four millenniaonths, given that Trump has gone so far beyond the pale now that McConnell barely even registers anymore. Still, it just goes to show that American politics (or, at least, the right-wing part of it) were incredibly broken long before Trump ever became President (the first time). And I will continue to claim that if it weren't for Mitch McConnell, Trump probably would not have become President (again, at the very least). But then, American (right-wing) politics were broken well before even McConnell became a Senator in 1985, for that matter. Though he was already active in politics for about two decades before that, which is probably around when the GQP first started to derail, if not before.

All that said, though, at least the make-up of the executive and legislative will change (hopefully for the better) over the course of the next half decade or so. Not so much the SCOTUS, since those stupid assholes were appointed for life, and as I've said many times elsewhere, they will continue to screw over this country for decades to come (as was the plan of McConnell and those of like mind), long after Trump and McConnell are dust in the wind.
