Rock, Paper, Shotgun Verdict on Spore.

I pretty much agree with what they're saying overall.

However, I'm not sure I get why they seem to be having so much trouble, relatively speaking, with the Space stage though. While I do agree that it is incredibly annoying to be attacked by pirates and such nearly constantly, especially in the early stages of Space, later on you're able to pretty much ignore them altogether, thanks to the Uber Turret thing (the only problem being a slight sense of guilt for doing so, at least for me). About the only things I don't ignore now are eco disasters and Grox attacks.

Only once have I been attacked by another actual empire, and that was only after I stupidly started a war with them myself (due to doing a mission for another race who wanted me to go to their planet and destroy all of their turrets). After that, I decided to never do any more hostile missions (with this race, anyway). And even then, the war didn't last all that long, due to me spending the next hour or two focusing exclusively on gathering and selling spice in order to build up enough money to bribe the other race into a truce. It ended up taking the max amount of around 10 million spore bucks or whatever to do that, and this was before I had the ridiculous amounts of money and ability to easily get more if needed that I have now. (In fact, it was because of that war and my desire to end it as quickly as possible, that directly lead to me having the huge income that I have now to spend on other more interesting things.) And I only actually got my homeworld attacked once by the warring empire during that whole time.

I've never once had another empire approach me out of the blue and demand money or else war (and even if I ever do, I doubt any amount that they ask for at this point would be little more than a drop in the ocean, so I'd almost assuredly just pay it and not worry about it). Mostly because I now always gift/bribe, ally, embassy, and super happy ray the other races into oblivion as soon as I encounter them for the first time. They still try to kill each other and want me to help them, but I don't give a flip about that.

Anyway, maybe if you're playing as an aggressor empire, the game is harder or something? I don't know. I'll find out whenever I get around to building another creature/race. I intend to be a carnivorous jackass in my next playthrough.

I still haven't bothered with figuring out the Grox yet. They still occasionally attack the empires on the outer fringes of my explored space, closer to the center of the galaxy, but that's about it. My thing now is going around and uplifting every planet that I can find that has a creature, tribe, or civilization on it, and eventually adding them to my ever-growing list of allied races when they reach Space stage. I was a bit annoyed recently when one of the races that I had uplifted got wiped out by another pre-existing empire shortly afterward. The assholes had completely ignored that particular system up until that point, and had been content with just the two nearby systems that they owned, but as soon as a new star-faring race appeared on it, they moved in and captured it. If I weren't playing such a nice peaceful race, I might be tempted to roll up and wipe out their paltry two (now three, given their new acquisition) star systems myself. I may still eventually simply buy the systems out from under them and potentially wipe them out that way, even so, if it's possible to do so.

I've still probably only explored a small fraction of the single arm of the galaxy in which I've started, which leaves the other, like, five or six or however many arms there are and the center of the galaxy.

For now, however, I am off to play Force Unleashed, which just arrived today.

Oh, and also, Baldur's Gate III? But without Bioware? Hmmmmmmmm.... much ambivalence.
