I'll give the edge to Chrono Trigger (says Kane Magus), but Final Fantasy VI is really good, too.
That said, the entirety of "Dancing Mad" kind of stomps "World Revolution," not that "World Revolution" isn't still pretty great, even so. That said, to be fair to Chrono Trigger, the (spoilers for Chrono Trigger in the next link) final boss isn't just the part with "World Revolution." (And again, yes, it is possible to beat all of that with only Crono, by himself.)
For me, though, the top-most tier boss/character theme of Chrono Trigger will always be "Battle with Magus."
(I really need to find a way to play Radiant Historia one of these days.)

Date: 2026-05-13 12:02 am (UTC)From:I really need to replay Chrono Trigger one of these days. I remember approximately nothing about it except for the fact that I thought it was the best RPG ever back when I played it. Also, back then, I had no idea who any of the fancy Japanese names were on the development team so I couldn't really appreciate what a who's who of talent they'd gathered for that. I mean, the only name I recognized was Nobuo Uematsu, and he was barely even involved. And even that was basically an accident.
Final Fantasy VI, I seem to be in the minority in that I think it really wasn't all that great. I mean, yeah, it was an incredible RPG, but I always felt it was trying a bit too hard, trying to squeeze in more game than the game could really handle. The scale of the story was great, but they could've told that just as well with maybe half the roster and side quests and grinding and mini-games and etc.
(This same argument can be applied to Final Fantasy VII as well, which I also think is way overrated.)
The soundtrack was awesome though, arguably the greatest Final Fantasy soundtrack ever (One could argue the Final Fantasy X soundtrack is better, but I don't like comparing PS2-era soundtracks with SNES-era soundtracks, they're just too different). I'd be hard-pressed to choose between Chrono Trigger and Final Fantasy VI for best soundtrack, honestly. They're both incredible.
(btw, your "Battle with Magus" link is broken).

Date: 2026-05-13 04:17 am (UTC)From:I remember liking FF6 and FF7, and even FF8 to an extent. It was FF9 where I finally started to slide off of the series, which is kind of odd since it seems like the majority consensus is that FF9 is one of the best in the series. It's been decades since the last time I played any of them, though, so I'm not sure how well they'd hold up if I were to try them again now.
But yeah, aside from that, the music has always been consistently good in the FF and Chrono games (including Radical Dreamers). Hell, even "baby's first RPG" Mystic Quest had killer music.

Date: 2026-05-13 06:01 am (UTC)From:I enjoyed FF6 and FF7 well enough, but honestly I preferred FF4 (aka FF2). Which is another game I need to go back and play again, since I honestly don't know if FF4 was even any good or if it's just nostalgia glasses tinting my memories.
A big part of it is probably because I just don't care for open-world RPGs in general. Like, I enjoy a large explorable world, but that was the point where the Finals Fantasy stopped being so much about telling one clear coherent story with a beginning, middle and end, rather they just pointed you in a vague direction and told you to kinda just do whatever, with plenty of random distractions on the way to keep you distracted rather than actually progressing the plot. Sure, there was still a Big Bad out there somewhere, but he can wait, I still haven't found 23 of the 35 tiny toy soldiers I need to collect for some reason.
Nice for padding the running time, I guess, but otherwise meh. I'll take a good curated story over a sandbox with a bunch of... stuff... anyday.
That said, I did love FF9 when it came out. Mostly noped out of 8 though, played it briefly and just... didn't care enough to finish it.
