Apparently,
Final Fantasy XIII-2 ends on a cliffhanger, with a "To Be Continued" stinger. Seriously.
Could this be
owsf2000's long-ago-made prediction of games that have had their endings cut out and sold separately as DLC coming true? Definitely seems like a possibility, sure enough. Well, whether it's DLC for XIII-2 or another actual game, it's still a dick move either way. (EDIT 2) And, indeed, it ended up being
another game. A widely panned game that almost nobody that I know of actually liked at all. Oh, Square Enix... how the once mighty have fallen. (/EDIT 2)
Really, this kind of thing just blows. It wasn't okay when
Soul Reaver did it. It wasn't okay when
Shenmue did it. It wasn't okay when
Dreamfall did it. It wasn't okay when
Halo did it. Hell, it wasn't okay when
Empire Strikes Back and
Dead Man's Chest did it either, and it seems to be increasingly becoming a Thing™ nowadays to release
one whole
movie in
two parts. (EDIT) Or in
three. (/EDIT) So it's not just video games that are doing this kind of crap.
At any rate, I almost can't believe now that I was just telling Mord over the weekend about playing the demo for XIII-2 and actually considering getting it. Screw that. At best, I am going to take a wait-and-see approach now, if I end up getting it at all. Maybe I'll wait until both parts are released and available in a bundle of some sort for a more appropriate price (kind of like what I'm eventually planning to do for
Starcraft II, assuming I ever bother to get that at all, either).
But then, as all those other examples above show, this can be done and has already been done. And, since most people just don't or won't have much of a problem with it, it will continue to be done. :(
