Hearing them talk about the Game Boy in
this video is both nostalgic and a bit depressing for me, because they're talking about all the games they haven't played yet, and I'm sitting there thinking, "Man, I only
wish I could play all of those games again for the first time ever." And yet here's the thing... not really being all that big a Contra guy back in the day myself, I've never played Operation C. I think now, after watching this video, that I would have absolutely loved that game if I'd gotten it along with
all the other games I had for the Game Boy.
That said, if they're looking for "bad even by Game Boy standards" games for
AVGN, I could certainly recommend them a few:
Alien vs Predator: The Last of His ClanDouble Dragon 3 (but then, Double Dragon 3 on any console was pretty shitty)
Mortal Kombat (given that
Mortal Kombat II for GB was much better, despite still being a GB game, I think it's fair to rip into how piss poor the port of MK1 was)
Pit Fighter (this right here is probably the single worst GB game I've ever played, though I suppose it still falls under James's exclusion of "not fair to mock as AVGN simply for being a terrible port.")
WWF SuperstarsTrue, most of those are indeed ports of better games on more powerful consoles and James said he didn't want to do that sort of thing for AVGN, but still, I think even for bad ports, they're pretty objectively terrible games, even by Game Boy standards. (Because, to be fair, the Game Boy was capable of
some pretty amazing things for the time.) There are other ports of NES games and such that
are actually pretty decent and not objectively horrible like the above, so there's no real excuse for those particular ports to be as horrendous as they are.
There are some others I played that are also pretty bad, but I still have something of a soft spot for them even so, and so I
won't list them here. >_>;
(As an aside, in response to what Mike said about Metroid Fusion, I bet people are saying that Fusion sucks for the same reasons they say that
Other M sucks. [Pro-tip: neither game sucks. At all.])
