"Spore Evolving to Big Screen"

What.

Other EA properties currently being adapted to film include The Sims, Army of Two, Dante’s Inferno, Dead Space and Mass Effect.

What.

No, really, I like Spore and The Sims well enough and all, but how and why are they being made into movies? Spore, maybe, as some sort of Pixar-ish thing, because there is the vague semblance of a story there, but The Sims? Uh... maybe the story of the disappearance of Bella Goth during Sims 2 or... something? Eh, I've got nothing.

For what it's worth, I don't see any of those other games making for very good movies either. But then, in general, video games don't make for very good movies.

Mass Effect had a good enough story to it, but I agree that it wouldn't necessarily turn into a good movie.

Yeah Spore and the Sims is insane, then again they're making a Shadow of the Colossus movie too, so yeah.

Shadow of the Colossus... hmm. Well, it had a story to it, but it certainly isn't enough to make into a movie. "Dude's girl is sick/dead. Dude learns he must kill 16 colossi in order to save her. Dude goes off and does it. Some vaguely twisty stuff in the last five minutes or so." While I liked doing nothing but going around fighting colossi in the game, I wouldn't want to watch a 2-hour or however long movie about some dude doing nothing but going around fighting colossi. Any extraneous plot they add to pad it out and make it a viable movie will likely suck, as such things rarely fail to do.

Speaking of adding extraneous plot to pad it out into a viable movie, I still haven't seen a movie concept to beat Asteroids (http://kane-magus.livejournal.com/260522.html) on the WTF scale, as of yet.

I don't know about that.Action movie wise it has enough to make a pretty decent movie.Just think of Clash of The Titans or Odysseus... Old movies yes but the premise of those movies were just as sparse in storyline..I just don't want them to over do the genre because I would really love to see a God of War Movie... talk about epic!!

The general movement in the movie industry is a bit upsetting..Have they run out of ideas? Are they so scared of making a flop that they are unwilling to try something fresh and new?

The why is easy. Some producer or studio exec saw their kid playing one of these games, looked up some sales figures, and got visions of bikini clad female bodies with dollar signs for heads doing coke and feeding him grapes. Amusing imagery aside, it all boils down to if somebody things they can make money off of it. Nobody makes bad movies targeted at niche audiences to win an Oscar. They make them to turn a profit. I see a Sims movie being very well-made, but only if it has no semblance at all to the game.

...which defeats the purpose of making a Sims movie.

I propose:

Attempt 1: A family (the Goths?) emigrates to America. The father, an educated man, must support his family while flipping burgers. The mother faces temptation from a seductive female neighbor. The son learns how to be cool in middle school while the daughter has to deal with some form of Sims discrimination and meets her husband.

Attempt 2: People log into the virtual world an use avatars called "Sims" to live out their every fantasy. But, someone calling himself "The Reaper" is killing Sims, and when your Sim dies, you die.
