(I will blatantly steal from [livejournal.com profile] rabbitucker and post the following: "Be warned about something before continuing: This blog entry is loaded with links, and many of those links go to TVTropes.com. Be careful about following them, as they might result in losing hours of internet time before you are even aware that you've wandered off course.")

I was at Panera today, and after the cashier took my order, she says "Have you ever seen Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas?" I was like, "...uh, no, I haven't seen it." She says "It's based on a book by Hunter S. Thompson. I'm sure you've at least heard of it." I nod "Yeah, I'm aware of it." She says "It's just that your glasses remind me of Johnny Depp from that movie, and that's really cool!" I'm like "Uh, okay... thanks?" She says "Well, here's your receipt. Have a nice day!" And I mumble "...yeah, you too." and walk away.

Really... how does one respond to something out of the blue like that in a way that doesn't consist of caught-off-guard bumbling and WTFness? I mean, I really hope I didn't project a "What are you smoking? o_O" kind of vibe, because she did sound quite complimentary about it and perhaps even a bit flirty and stuff, and it was somewhat flattering I guess. (I mean, what guy doesn't want to be compared to Johnny Depp?) But... well... it's just that I'm really, seriously, horrendously, nigh-irredeemably bad with that sort of thing. And, indeed, it did catch me completely off guard (not that I would have had more than a few seconds to do or say anything anyway, before the people in line behind me would have started brawling). I'm not even going to begin to pretend like I'm some kind of suave Casanova/Chick Magnet/Charmer or anything here. (I'm not even a Leisure Suit Larry. If anything, I'm one [of many] example[s] that Nerds Are Virgins is Truth In Television, because I freely admit that I'm in the "never so much as wandered within a mile of the ballpark" category. To over-extend the metaphor here, let's just say that I'm not very athletic and don't much care for the effort involved in playing sports.)

Anyway, upon returning to the office and looking up images of Johnny Depp from Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas... I just don't see the resemblance. >_>; My old glasses from years ago when I was a kid were that big, maybe... but my current ones are fairly small in comparison. It just makes the whole thing that much weirder.

And I know I don't look anything like Johnny Depp...
