I'm picking up some anti-SOS vibes from somewhere. I can't quite put my finger on it, but it's a definite vibe. If it felt any more real it'd be oozing out of my monitor... Strange.
It's a class I'm taking at DigiPen. A class that I am coming to despise more and more with each passing day. "Social and Cultural Perspectives on Technology" is the actual title of the class. In theory, it's a class where you look at different technologies from varying points of view through the ages and how they affect society, but in practice it seems to be more about looking at how technology is Satan and how we should all go back to living in caves. I exaggerate, of course, but not by a whole lot. Honestly though, I wish I had a dollar for everytime I've read something in the assigned textbook (Society and Technological Change, by Rudi Volti) along the lines of "[insert technology] is bad. It causes [insert problems here]. However, that's not to say that [repeat problems here] is all there is to [insert technology] because [insert weak, half-assed attempt to make the given technology not appear as evil as it has been presented up to this point]. And yet, [insert yet another reiteration of the evils of the given technology]." Seriously. In the chapter about the printing press and newspapers and such, the book said the following: "It would be an exaggeration to say that the Spanish-American War, or any other major historical event, was directly caused by the reportage of circulation-hungry mass newspapers." And this was after several paragraphs of the book heavily implying that the Spanish-American War could have been averted had it not been for William Randolph Hearst's New York Journal and Joseph Pulitzer's New York World newspapers and how they whipped the country into a war frenzy.
The main reason for my post last night was the research paper we had to write that was due this morning, which was as much of an inane, tedious waste of time as I expected it would be. On the bright side though, now that the paper is finished, this class is pretty much over. All that's left is the final exam (which is not cumulative), and whatever other pop-quizzes the teacher decides to drop on us in the next few weeks. I actually almost welcome the pop-quizzes these days, because the time usually wasted on the silly, pointless discussion thing we do at the end of every single class is instead eaten up by the quiz.
I just sorely wish now that I had tried to switch to the other section of this same class, which is being taught by the same excellent teacher who teaches the mythology class I'm in, rather than the dull, formulaic teacher who's teaching the section I'm stuck in.
Rovner = teh ownzorz. Seriously, I'm really impressed by his teaching style, and I can see why a bunch of students last semester were trying to circulate a petition to have him teaching more classes. He has his own opinions on the myth stuff (which I don't always agree with) that he presents to us, but doesn't force on us by saying, "This is how it is because I said so." I also like the open dicussion in the class, though certain people just need to stop talking altogether. Sorry you couldn't get into Rovner's Sosh class - I feel as if (dare I say it?) I'm actually learning something, which I know wouldn't happen if I had Lovelace. But look on the bright side...at least she's no Cockbite, right?
Yeah, that's one good thing I can say about her, I suppose. She only gave one inane, tedious waste of time writing assignment, whereas he gave several. And she'll probably actually read them as well, unlike him and his 30-45 page journal assignment.
As for Rovner though, if there's a class in the future with the choice of taking it with Rovner or someone else, I'm definitely trying everything in my power to get the one with Rovner. Not sure how many more classes there are with the potential of having him as a teacher though, but still... He's most assuredly one of the best teachers I've ever had.
I hate SOS 150-B.
