To repeat: "Free-ish for the first week." Their words, not mine. After that week (which is already over, anyway, as of today), they'll cost $2.99. And apparently, they "couldn't" give it away completely for free on some platforms even during that week, due to arbitrary bullshit.
Note that this isn't just for the console and mobile versions, but also for the new "improved" Windows 10 version. I don't know if they're charging for this horseshit on the original version of Minecraft (or if it's even available for that at all), but this right here, friends and neighbors, is the future (and, indeed, the present) of Minecraft, now that it's in the hands of Micro$hit. But then, it wasn't like Micro$hit wasn't already charging for asinine crap like this in Minecraft even beforethey bought MojangMojang was sold out to them.
But don't worry, they make a big show about how some (but apparently not all) of that shit will be "free forever," like they're extending a boon from on high to the great unwashed or something.
Oh, and I'm still waiting for a severe 75%-or-greater discount to hit Minecraft Story Mode itself on Steam before I even remotely consider trying it. I mean, I like TellTale and all, but still.
(Sadly, DoNotLink seems to be down for good, so I used archive.today instead, though I don't know if that's quite the same thing? Maybe it's even better, in a way, since it apparently also blocks ad revenue to the site in question, instead of merely preventing increased search engine standing, which was apparently all that donotlink did? In any case, I hate to give Mojang any traffic at all these days, if I can avoid it. The original link is still there in the archive.today thing, if you really must visit the site on your own.)

Date: 2016-04-13 07:17 pm (UTC)From:Hm. So I guess if all 5 chapters are out for Story Mode... it's still not the end? I have no idea if it ended on a cliffhanger or not of course since I haven't so much as looked at this since their completely fucked up physical copy release for consoles - where they only put 1/5 of the game on the disc along with a DLC coupon for the remaining 4. (Which defeats the purpose of people wanting a fucking physical copy.)
I suspect these skins are available directly from mojang for the PC version since ... well, people are able to just -make- skins for that version. So you can bet people will be making and releasing these things on sites anyway. As to if anyone would actually -want- to use them, that's another thing entirely.
In all honesty this shows you what Mojang is really like anyway. You can see what they'd do to the PC version IF they had any real way to enforce it without destroying the game's popularity. ie: They'd reel in the ability for people to make their own skins and resource packs etc so that they could sell them.
"That's only for consoles and locked down systems where it's necessary!" you say? Well. Windows 10 version.
I wouldn't touch Mojang DLC on consoles anyway. Apparently on the PS4 for instance they're one of only 2 companies (At the time anyway, this could have changed over the year) that make use of the online checkin for DLC verification. IE: Even if you buy DLC (which is nothing but skin packs and resource packs) for Minecraft on the PS4 (maybe PS3 as well, but I don't know for sure) then if you aren't connected to the internet when you start the game... you STILL can't use the DLC you've purchased.

Date: 2016-04-13 08:56 pm (UTC)From:And I'm honestly kind of surprised that there even still are PS3/PS4 versions of Minecraft at all, what with Mojank being owned by Micro$hit now and all, because you know if Micro$hit had gotten their hands on Mojank before those version had been released, they never would have seen the light of day to begin with.

Date: 2016-04-14 06:36 am (UTC)From:At that point I guess they figured they could milk some extra money from non-xbox players by releasing/updating them.
Of course they probably wanted to desperately avoid "oh look at that. Microsoft's shafting the Sony console players of Minecraft." blame that would have definitely been leveled at them.
I just blame the guy that ran away the instant he got backlash for trying to put his foot down on the server abuse (servers bilking players for "ranks" and shit for ingame perks - some servers to the tune of 1000 dollars or more.)
