More on Spore

Here is a two-part interview with Will Wright. The first part is about Spore, and the second part is more about gaming in general. You may want to watch these videos twice, once to listen to what Wright is actually saying, and again to pay attention to the Spore screens in the background. Some of those spaceship designs were ludicrous, but in a good way.

Two things I drew from this. The first is a reinforcement of my perception that Will Wright is a genius, as far as game design goes. I know that has been said quite often, but it really is true. The second is that every time I hear something new about Spore, the more I DO WANT this game. As long as it doesn't end up going the way of Fable*, it is going to be teh best gaem evar.

Oh, in related news and if anyone cares, I made a couple of creatures with the trial version of the Creature Creator. I haven't messed with it much at all beyond that, and these aren't anything special, but here they are anyway. (EDIT) Well, I just made a couple more, just to mess around. May make some more later. (/EDIT)

* - I liked Fable, don't get me wrong, enough so that I actually re-bought it when they released The Lost Chapters on the PC. What I didn't like so much was that they promised the moon (similar to what Will Wright is promising here with Spore), and then delivered what was merely a fairly good action-RPG. I have a fear that Peter Molyneux may be doing the same thing with Fable 2, but I hope that I'm wrong.

Not really. I've heard the rumors that Spore will have it, and that the Creature Creator itself already has it. I haven't personally had any problems with games that are using it (e.g. C&C 3, the later Sims expansions, etc.), and so am not militantly against it. If I had or if I ever do, however, my opinion may change for the worse though.

But on the whole I do generally think it's one of those dumb schemes that apparently tends to hurt legitimate consumers more so than the hackers/pirates it's meant to hinder, since they're always going to crack it within a day or two anyway. The publishers have to try to do something about piracy, I guess, but screwing over legit customers in the process isn't the best way to go about it.
