Another copy/paste-from-Facebook post.
This is in response to a post made on
tokoz's FB page of this article. I will not copy/paste what
tokoz wrote, because I don't feel at liberty to do so, but I will copy/paste (with one slight edit which will probably be obvious) my own reaction to the article:
Yet another reason in a very long, ever-growing list of reasons why the modern video game industry is utter horseshit, and the sooner an industry-wide crash occurs as a result, the better off everyone will probably be, in the long run, as things reconfigure into something less utterly horseshit.
From the article: "'Rioters,' those who worked at [Riot Games], were expected to conform to the narrow archetype of a 'core gamer.' This was defined not only by competency in and passion for video games, but by a certain coarse personality that delights in abusive 'humor.'"
Hell, even *if* a company forcing its employees to emulate the personality of a "core gamer" all the time was an acceptable practice, which it is *not,* if that is what is the generally accepted meaning of being a "core gamer," then "core gamers" can fuck off entirely, as far as I'm concerned. I've long since dismissed the idea of the "video game community" as bullshit, and this is an example of why that is the case, even ignoring the fact that *forcing* someone to behave that way when they otherwise probably wouldn't and wouldn't want to is even worse.
And I've already said quite a damn lot about how crunch is worse-than-useless dumbshit in earlier posts, so I'll just leave that as it is for now.
Though, as
tokoz and the article itself point out, all of this isn't a problem with *just* the video game industry. Companies, video game or otherwise, should not be allowed to own an employee's personality, on or off the clock.
