"A US Senator has introduced a bill to ban loot boxes and pay-to-win transactions."
As usual, Ian cuts to the heart of the matter. "Loot boxes are just a garbage mechanic, and any way that they go away would be fine."
As for Pat's counter that some games will "only exist" if they have loot boxes... well... as far as I am concerned, any game that needs loot boxes in order to continue existing is a game that needs to not exist at all to begin with. Fuck games like that. To hell with 'em. They can and should die.
Honestly, though, I'm highly ambivalent about this. On the one hand, to hell with the modern video game industry. But on the other hand, to hell with the United States government, too. They're not the good guys here, they're just, in this particular case at least, the slightly less scuzzy guys.
In any case, I still pretty much agree with Tycho from Penny Arcade, though, in that the likelihood of this bill passing is pretty close to non-existent, regardless of whether it's "good" or not.
Also, Pat's tangentially related rant about lobby groups was pretty great, too. (That said, I would definitely not just want The Government™ sending me a bottom line bill in the mail saying "You owe this much in taxes. Period." without having any input into the matter at all.)
