A post by Athena Scalzi on Whatever.

My experience playing Stardew Valley, the half a dozen times or so that I've tried it and never even got past the first (or, once, second) season, has been to go in with the mindset of "This time, I'm really just going to do whatever and not worry about anything." And then, invariably and almost immediately, it becomes "Well, I can do farming stuff today or I can go to town and talk to people today or I can fish today or I can go to the mines today, but I can't do all of that stuff in a single day, so... I guess I'll do none of it," and then I quit, delete my save, and uninstall yet again. For a game that is supposedly about relaxing and going at your own pace, it weirdly and paradoxically triggers FOMO (and I have to admit that I'm beginning to hate that particular four letter acronym, even if I sometimes use it myself such as here) in a way that few other games do. And yeah, once you start a wiki dive to figure out which townie likes which gift or whatever, it spirals out of control, and that's when it's all over.

And now, despite all of that, I kind of want to reinstall and play Stardew Valley again. Go figure. It really is a good game, what I've played of it... it's just that it's almost too much of a good thing, in a way.
