I've long known of the story about how Miyamoto drew from his childhood explorations to create The Legend of Zelda, but I have to admit that this is the first I've heard that it was originally meant to be a Mario game in its earliest stages (assuming that's even accurate).
Anyway, outside of that bit of (questionable) trivia, it's a pretty good article about the origins of Zelda and the process of how it was created.
