A post on John Scalzi's Internet blog thingie.

The gist: due to almost cartoon supervillain-levels of evil (and overreaching stupidity[1]), the GQP so completely fucked up their attempt to de facto ban abortion in Ohio, via an initiative that would have effectively banned everything in Ohio, that even members of the old-school GOP[2] spoke out to try to convince people of how asinine it was, and just enough current GQP voters (or, perhaps, some of the few remaining old guard GOP voters, if such creatures still exist at all) actually were successfully convinced to vote against it, thus it failed by 57%. (Though, in my personal opinion, that is still a too small margin of victory for the good guys, given the circumstances.)

This is just a microcosm of U.S. politics at large, these days. I.e. the GQP, on a national scale, is just as guilty of almost cartoon supervillain-levels of evil (and overreaching stupidity). It's just that, on a national scale, there seem to be far fewer old school GOP members (currently in office or otherwise) who are willing to stand up and call out the GQP asshats on their blatant horseshit.[3] (And when they do, they tend to get shunned/voted out of office by current GQP dumbfucks.) And there are far fewer GQP voters who are willing to rub their two brain cells together and think for themselves and do the right thing, rather than simply voting in mindless lockstep with however the almost cartoon supervillain-level evil (and stupidly overreaching) shithead "leaders" command them to vote. The only thing we can hope for is that the GQP, on a national scale and in general, proves to be just as incompetent and ineffective as the Ohio GQP was in this particular case.

(EDIT)

Oh, and Mr. Scalzi's point #7, down at the bottom of his post, is a point that I fully agree with. Democrats/liberals, regardless of how angry they may get about any one particular issue, do indeed tend to be far too complacent about all of this shit, on a larger scale. They get one small victory (e.g. this thing here, or, say, Trump being defeated in the 2020 election, etc.) and they tend to see it as job well done and call it a day. Whereas Republicans/conservatives keep gnawing on the bone forever and never let it go. It's why I'm such a cynic/pessimist about pretty much everything political and usually express the whole "not going to hold my breath" mantra with it all. Until and unless Democrats/liberals can get into the "gnaw on that bone until it is well and truly gone" mindset, the GQP will, sadly, dangerously, continue to exist.

(EDIT 2) *points at this again* (/EDIT 2)

(/EDIT)

[1] - Never dismiss as mere stupidity that which is indeed actively malicious.

[2] - I'm making a distinction here between the current GQP and the old-school GOP, incredibly minuscule though that distinction may be. They're all still Republicans/conservatives, after all.

[3] - When, of all people, Dick goddamn Cheney, who was one of the more supervillain-like assholes of the old guard GOP back in the day, is one of the few remaining ones willing to do so, that shows you just how far the GO/QP has fallen.
