Apropos of everything, I think I will just leave this here, again:
"All obstructions to the execution of the Laws, all combinations and associations, under whatever plausible character, with the real design to direct, controul, counteract, or awe the regular deliberation and action of the constituted authorities, are destructive of this fundamental principle, and of fatal tendency. They serve to organize faction, to give it an artificial and extraordinary force---to put in the place of the delegated will of the nation, the will of a party, often a small but artful and enterprizing minority of the community; and, according to the alternate triumphs of different parties, to make the public administration the mirror of the ill concerted and incongruous projects of faction, rather than the organ of consistent and wholesome plans digested by common councils, and modified by mutual interests.
"However combinations or associations of the above description may now and then answer popular ends, they are likely in the course of time and things, to become potent engines, by which cunning, ambitious and unprincipled men will be enabled to subvert the power of the people, and to usurp for themselves the reigns of government; destroying afterwards the very engines which have lifted them to unjust dominion."
-- George Washington, excerpted from his 1796 Farewell Address
I strongly feel like if Washington were still alive today, he'd look around at all the bullshit going on now, nod his head solemnly, and say, "Yes, this is exactly what I meant when I wrote that."
It's like the Trumpublicans took what Washington said there and decided to see it as a life goal, rather than as the dire warning Washington clearly meant it to be. Granted, the Democrats and all the others are just as indicative of this problem, in their own ways, but at least they're not actively and flagrantly doing the very thing (i.e. usurping for themselves the reigns of government; destroying afterwards the very engines which have lifted them to unjust dominion) that Washington warned about in his speech there. But then, I bet that all the Trumpanzees in the country would counter that, no, ackchyually, it is the rest of us who are doing that thing. Go figure. This country is fucked.
I mean, even if the Jan. 6 hearings are completely successful and end up with Trump and everyone within smelling distance of Trump going away to prison forever (and though the entire thing sounds utterly dire for the Trumpublicans, I still feel like that end result is just a pie in the sky pipe dream), that would still accomplish exactly jack and shit as far as curbing the broken Supreme Court (that Trump, doing the bidding of Bitch McConnell and the rest, ramrodded into existence) and their terrible decisions for the next several decades or so. That's something that will continue to fuck over the country long after Trump and Bitch McConnell and the rest are nothing but food for worms (or ashes on the wind, as the case may be).
