Just finished Half-Life 2: Episode 2 for the first time.
...
God damn.
I won't say that this is definitely the most powerfully emotional moment I've witnessed in a video game, but I can honestly say that I can't think of a more powerful one at the moment.
Okay maybe one:
When Cloud meets up with Aerith in the Forgotten City, Sephiroth drops out of nowhere and stabs her in the back, and then Aerith's theme starts up when the White Materia hits the ground. I'm sure there are some others, but that's the only I came up with after thinking about it for a few minutes.
(Spoiler Space, just in case)

When Eli was saying "Close your eyes, honey! Don't look!" to Alyx just before the Combine Advisor rammed its proboscis thing into the back of his head, that's what got me.
Basically, in Episode 3, if I am not allowed to personally murder many, many Combine Advisors, I will be upset. If Alyx is not allowed to help while I am murdering many, many Combine Advisors, and in fact if she is not allowed the killing blow on the one that killed Eli, I will also be upset. The fact that Dog partially kicks the ass of the other one was some small comfort, but still...
...there will be reprisals.
The ending of this game was the exact opposite of the ending of Portal in terms of the mood I was in as the credits rolled. It takes a hell of a lot to mess me up like this these days, but this one got me. Good on Valve, I'll say. That was some heavy shit.
