I first learned of the existence of Dwarf Fortress not quite a year ago thanks to Three Panel Soul. I thought I'd made a post here about it back then, but apparently not. Anyway, Dwarf Fortress is an ASCII-based* world simulation game, in which you play as a colony of dwarves. You're trying to get a foothold in the world and make a fortress, and then branch out and become a successful civilization.
I tried to get into this back then, and it looked like it would be very interesting to play. However, at the time, I was busy with other things and just didn't really get into it. Part of the reason for this is that the game is very very complex, it seems. I just couldn't get the hang of it in the limited time that I had to mess with it, and then kind of forgot about it afterward.
Well, it looks like there are a series of extensive tutorials available for the game now that weren't around back then. Therefore, I might give this a shot again soon.
* - Originally, though it seems there are some tile-based graphics packs that I didn't know about before, judging from the screenshots in the tutorial... interesting. Makes me want to try it again even more.

My favorite was to build a thriving metropolis under a human city, and then undermine the structural stability to the point that the human city collapsed on the dwarf metropolis, killing all but one of my dwarves. The human city did much better, and still tried to come trade with me, was kinda funny.
