Date: 2009-05-09 09:37 am (UTC)From:But within the context of the universe itself, the original timeline would now no longer exist. However, since they are all aware that their timeline was changed when Nero showed up, there's nothing really stopping them from later sending another, more powerful ship back in time to blast his little mining ship into dust as soon as it appeared in the past, or even before (or, rather, after) that to the point where they and Spock Prime got sucked into the thing to begin with. Granted, this still would not restore the true original timeline exactly, but if they stopped Nero before he actually did anything of note, the changes to the timeline would be minimal enough that it would be effectively identical to the original. Of course, then there would be the whole paradox of them now no longer needing to send a ship back, and thus they wouldn't, so it would all happen again as before, and... so on.

Date: 2009-05-11 06:17 am (UTC)From:I've thought about it some more, and even if they don't send another ship back or some such, the simple matter of Nero in the first place has already caused a paradox, given that . As such, it is far less likely that there will be any of it around for them to use to create the original time travel event, unless Spock Prime has the plans to make red matter tucked away somewhere and can give it to someone, like he did the plans for the crazy long-range transporters that he gave to Scotty. And so Nero of the current timeline (assuming he even exists/will exist at all now) won't go back in time and cause all of this to happen, which means that rocks fall and everybody dies.
It's probably pretty clear already, but I love/hate stuff like this (http://www.mjyoung.net/time/index.htm). I can't wait to see their take on the new Trek movie.
* - At least, that's the case according to the prequel comic mentioned by gbeans (http://gbeans.livejournal.com/203385.html), which I have since acquired and read, through nefarious means. As an aside, that comic also says that after Romulus was destroyed, Nero's mining ship, which had looked fairly normal up to that point, was upgraded with salvaged Borg technology that the Romulans had been hoarding in a secret base, which explained why it was all scary looking in the movie. I thought that was pretty amusing.
