After my current Xbox Live subscription expires, I think I'm switching to Free.

Especially given the rate hike that went into effect yesterday, and, more importantly, given the reasons for said rate hike.

I seriously could not care less about map packs for Call of Duty (or about Call of Duty itself, in general), or about Gears of War or Halo, or about ESPN or any of that other useless crap that comes with a Gold account... so yeah, I think I'm going to switch to Free when my current Gold subscription expires. Honestly, given that I currently do absolutely zero multiplayer gaming anyway, I don't think I've ever really needed Xbox Live Gold to begin with. I had a "free" year that came with my original Comcast subscription back in 2004 that I never got around to using until after I got my 360 in 2007, and I've renewed it for the past few years due to simple inertia. But now I think I'm done paying (more) for stuff that I don't use and in which I have no interest in the slightest.

my parents got those "3 month free" subscriptions for my sisters with their 360 or whatever it was - required credit card to use - then microsoft kept on billing them after that. Of course they just went along with it and kept it anyway after they couldn't seem to get it stopped. Although that'll likely change next year.
