Based on the headline, I went into this one thinking that I was going to completely disagree with it like I did the previous 1up OP-ED piece I posted about, but having read the whole thing, I think I actually agree with it more than I disagree.

Why does the game industry churn out so much monotonous crap like Call of Duty these days? Because that's what most people seem to buy. Why do most people buy monotonous crap like Call of Duty? Because that's mostly what the game industry churns out these days. It's the circle of life. I think it's about 50/50 as to whether it's the consumer base or the industry itself that is to blame here.

That said, I don't think this is some new phenomenon occurring, nor do I think it is quite as dire as the article makes it out to be.

It's definitely not a new phenomenon. Even back in the Atari 2600 era there's a reason why the market was flooded with space shooter and maze type games.
