Ha.
Talk to me in twenty years when Mojang has bought up half of the industry and subsequently shut it down while churning out one-tenth-assed versions of previously awesome games made by those companies before Mojang bought them, and then we'll talk about Mojang being worse than EA.
(EDIT) Oh man, how things have changed for the worse since I originally wrote this post. (/EDIT)
Anyway, it looks like Notch is kind of pissed about this whole thing and the reaction to it.
So here's an honest question: Does EA allow people to monetize their shit in this manner? I honestly don't know, but something tells me that EA would probably be a whole lot less nice about it than Mojang has been so far if it was going on and they found out about it.

The same is true with the vast majority of the gaming industry these days. They'd shut down any third party server if they found one, and since such a thing would require their code to be hacked to connect to it, I wouldn't be surprised if they tried to go after all the players that connected to such a server.
Still, Mojang has itself to blame for this kind of reaction at this point. They knew it was going on, even without staying in touch with the fanbase, they'd know about servers doing this stuff the second they got the first angry parent email that Notch mentions having gotten plenty of times.
They didn't crack down on it, and as a result it became pretty common place for public servers. Virtually every public server I've checked out (Except for 1.) seems to have a full blown "pay for perk" setup in the form of donations. That one exception server has taken donations, but it was for the proper things. Hosting fees and equipment upgrades. To my knowledge there was no perks given to the donators.
