Huh, how about that. I'm not sure I agree with the rationalization that "sex is the quickest way to establish a meaningful relationship between characters" in a video game, though. In fact, I'm pretty sure I don't agree with it. The sex in, say, God of War or Grand Theft Auto doesn't establish particularly meaningful relationships between the characters engaged in it, for example, and there have been plenty of games that were able to establish meaningful relationships between characters quite quickly and easily with no need for them to have sex. Sounds like a bit of an ass-pull of an excuse to me.
Anyway, I've never finished the first Witcher game, though I own both it and the second one, which I haven't even started on, yet. I should probably get around to playing those and this new third one, someday. No, it's not because of the subject of this article (har har), but simply because I've heard they're good games. The first one was pretty good, true enough (but not, apparently, good enough that I've ever actually finished it during the two or three times I've given it a try). Honestly, the sex in the first game was indeed pretty tacky, as mentioned in the article, though not a prominent part of the game. It would just do a weird fade thing, and then you'd be given a collectible card featuring the girl you'd just had sex with, in a provocative pose (and topless, if you have the Director's Cut version of the game). No idea what it was like in the second game, since, again, I haven't played it at all yet. But apparently it's a fairly big part of the third game? I mean, you don't just create 16 hours of mo-cap sex if you don't intend to show off at least some of it, right? ¬_¬
In any case, though, they're right in that the sex is a fairly basic and not-all-that-big-a-deal part of the universe, including in the books. There's nothing straight up pornographic that I recall about it in those, though. Or, at least not in the few of them that have been translated into English and which I've read so far, anyway (though I see that there are apparently at least two more that have been translated into English since the last time I checked several years ago).
