"We fully understood exactly what we were doing, but just didn't give a fuck and hoped we could get away with it anyway, because money" would probably fit better in too many more cases, however. And in too many cases, they do get away with it. It's just that in this one particular case, they got caught out, faced more opposition than they anticipated, and had to backpedal. This certainly wouldn't be the first time a game company overreached with their asinine, moneygrubbing bullshit and then had to backtrack on it, and it likely won't be the last.
